topic What exactly do 1-2-3 keys do? in Maya Modeling Forum

Hello,

So, I am creating a character and I am using the "1" and "3" keys to smooth/unsmooth various parts of my character. When I go to render out my character, will the smoothing have stayed all the way through, or are the 1-3 keys just a temporary smoothing so you can get an idea of how it will look when when you apply a smooth to the mesh?

Also, is it a bad thing to smooth everything on your character (let's say its a Robot) and then just refine all the parts so parts that are supposed to be sharp stay kinda sharp?

Smoothing with '3' is just a temporary look to see how your model would look once smoothed, '2' shows the wireframe of the model you made but shows the actual mesh inside of it that has been "preview" smoothed; and then '1' just takes you back to your original model.

Also, it is not bad to make your whole model smoothed, but it does create more polygons however if you're making a robot then you would probably want to look into just using something like Edit Mesh --> Bevel.

- bccmini
