You can't have overlaping UVs and make sure in the UV editor UV Sets you have the correct one.

Okay that's good to know Esano, would you like to upload the file and texture, I could take a look.

On another note , you seem to have wasted a lot of UV space for your texture but its something you'll improve for sure later on.

a quick thing to check is your 2D placement node, make sure is not rotated or something unusual.

Thanks Esano, like I said you have two Uv sets and the image is applied to the wrong one, usually you wanna have one UV map called "Map1"....you have another one called "Default"...you need to delete that , see my image...now your Map1 seems to be slightly out of alignment but that should be easier to fix by repositioning the UV shells.

Also very important, you must delete the history as you progress with your model, this is a real bad habit and will slow down Maya to a halt...Delete all by type > History...see the different types of delete history, sometimes you might not want to delete stuff that is still being used like deformers and bound skin.

Also as mentioned before, next time improve on sewing the UV edges so you can use more UV space which is equal more resolution for your texture "Very important".

Also clean up the hypershade for unused nodes, keep scene organized and clean all the time .

The bottom of the legs have to be cleaned up, you have two large Ngons there, connect the edges and make everything quads, other than that the model looks good, nice job and keep moving forward.

Here's an example of using maximum texture resolution, in this case the character's body will have clothing so the body will never be visible therefore is very small in the UV space, on the other hand the face will be very important so it takes a large area in the UV editor .

UV overlapping is okay in some circumstances.

There are different ways to approach this depending on the project.

No, the model is a single piece of geometry, then pants , shirt and shoes where a different pice each.

The character body UVs were then cut to pieces as you've seen in the image, but it's a single mesh.
