It looks like you are modifying a model that is already rigged and skinned...have you tried deleting non-deformer history before smoothing?

Hi there,

I tried smoothing a model I'm working on and it creates this weird artifact where one vertex is off on one translate axis.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I think it's maybe the topology or extra vertices.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, it is rigged and animated, but it was doing that before during the modelling process.

I did try deleting non-deformer history before smoothing too.

What you can also do is have your lowpoly skinned model, then duplicate that, smooth it and use copy skin to transfer the skinning.

EDIT: Forgot to write that you should smooth the copy. Whoops!

Hi,

I've zipped the file and uploaded it. If you try to smooth the mesh in this file the same thing shopuld happen.

I don't really need to know how to fix it if it's not a big issue — but if it's going to cause problems/issues I should fix it. Do you think it's just a display issue?

Thanks!

ok i had a quick look.

it seems like it´s not an display issue. ad if you use maya catmull-clark for smoothing instead of the default open subd it does not happen. open subd appears to be a bit more peaky about meshes than maya c-c. even if i don´t see obvious errors in the mesh there is something not ok in your scene. once i smooth it, i either get an instand crash or i can do some more clicks but always end up with maya crashing. so far i can see the problems with smoothing and crashing go away when i export the mesh (just tested with the main half body) as obj. make sure you set all options like normals etc. to NO at export to get rid of as much possible sources of problems as possible.

Yes, I agree with sebastian_freigang.

If you use default setting, Maya will crash.

Use Linear or Exponential - Maya Catmull-Clark will be OK for this model.
