Hi folks, I was working on something when I ran into this software glitch(?). I'm attaching a screen shot, so that you guys can have a proper look. Both the cubes in it are 3 smoothed, in Legacy Default Viewport. Although, they were made in different ways. I created two cubes, opened the Front View, and separated each to get a nice view of both. The first cube, I selected the top vertices, moved it up, used the Multicut tool to add 2-3 height segments and moved around the vertices and pressed 3. The second one, I scaled it upwards, and increased the Subdivision Heights to 3, moved around the vertices to make a random shape and pressed 3 also. Is there anyone facing the same issue as mine? By the way, This appears to be happening on both Maya 2015 and 2016, even after applying the latest service pack updates.

Cheers.

specially because its made out of a cube that has hard edges, so smoothing it might be messing the hard edges normals.

Hello dammagio, thank you for the response. I tried unlocking the normals and setting it back on. But it doesn't seem to be fixing the issue. Be reminded that this cube is a fresh creation, but only scaled upwards and 3 smoothed. There, you get a weird black/ grey shader. Take another cube, move the top vertices upwards instead of scaling, 3 smooth it. The shading becomes clean! I think you should give it shot and see it for yourself. 🙂 Do share your results. Again, the problem persists only in the Legacy Default Viewport.

Hi Abrahams, I tried more or less what you described and I don't see any artifacts on both Viewport options...I'm on Windows 7.

You can try to zip your file I'll take a look.

I actually found the fix. Just as how stupid it might sound, I simply froze the transformation and the weird shading disappeared, haha.
