How to make object emit light?

I am looking into making lights from objects, which is the best option for the objects to emit glow and light? 🙂

If you're using Mental Ray, you can assign the "Object Light" material to your model.

Just right-click and assign it as a new material...it's under the Mental Ray section. (See attached.)

Thank you lots! Is there also a way I can add a glow to this? Like a glowing rim around the lit object?

If you want to do something like that you may want to just use a surface shader and adjust its shader glow. Here's a quick tutorial on how to do something like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CijESEporUo

Thank you for the video! It's a pretty neat method! I am though having a little doubt as to how can I reduce the spread and noise of the rim?

The rim is controlled by the halo settings. If you open the Hypershade and click on the ShaderGlow node, you can adjust them in the attribute editor. Decrease the Halo Spread to make the "rim" smaller. (See attached.)

thank you about your answer but i have one question how can make this object get effected by shadow and still the other area without shadow emits light ? like moon
