Extract tool not working

Hi all - New to the Maya and the forum. I have a mesh that I am trying to split in half down the middle. What I've been trying to do is select face mode, then marquee select the half of the mesh I want to separate, then select the extract tool. What happens though is that the one half does indeed separate but as I pull it away from the other half it begins to deform and not retain its shape. Any suggestions for how to fix this? Thank you!

Hey,

welcome :),

this is how the extract tool is working. Either deselect everything and selecting the extracted mesh again which you want to move or select it inside the outliner. This should have solved your problem. If it doesn't you could provide some images of your model which makes it easier to see what's going on.
