Problem extruding in MAYA

Hello, I have recently installed MAYA and am currently learning about how to use it. I have found it to be a very good software so far and have not had any problems with it, this was until i tried to extrude a face. I got the red error message at the bottom of my screen saying '// Error: file: /Applications/Autodesk/maya2017/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/performSweepPreset.mel line 210: Select at least two NURBS curves; profile curve(s), then the path curve.', this means it will not let me extrude anything which of course is a big issue.

Any help would be appreciated,

Hi!

Extrude Polygon/Mesh and Extrude Nurbs/Surface are 2 different things.

Use the right tool for your Object(s).

I think you can only extrude when your object is a polygon, not a curve nor a surface.

Wrong, you can extrude Surface/Nurbs...

Hey, logged in just to type this. How about you give a useful reply instead of saying "you used the wrong tool", aka don't reply if you're going to be a useless ***.

Hi!

With the right tool i meant there are different tools based on editing a Nurbs or Polygon object.

- If you edit a Polygon object use a Polygon object/component editing tool and

- If you edit a Nurbs surface object use a surface editing tool

- If you edit a Nurbs curve use a curve editing tool

Check main menu for Mesh..., Surface..., Curve...

My first answer was to declare where the error message / problem comes from:

Extrude Polygon/Mesh vs Extrude Nurbs/Surface

The second answer was to show that it's possible to extrude Nurbs.

If an answer is not clear there is always the possibility to ask again or to ask more specific.

What's useless with this?

I have the same issue in nurbs path extrusion.

I select the profile (a nurb circle) to extrude along my second selection, a nurb curve, and no matter which order I choose the two nurbs, it always extrudes the path along the profile.

I am using Maya 2024 on a Mac.

Suggestions?

This happens because Maya is running the NURBS sweep/extrude command, not the polygon extrude.

That error message is for NURBS curves, which means Maya thinks you’re trying to extrude curves instead of polygon faces.

Fix:

Make sure you are in Polygon mode and a polygon face is selected
Use Edit Mesh → Extrude (not Surfaces → Extrude)
Or press Ctrl + E with a polygon face selected

If you accidentally used a shelf button or menu item under Surfaces, Maya will throw that error even on polygon meshes.
