Personally I use a Wacom Intuos Pro Small as I find it's an easy size and is already pretty big. Although Wacom also has a smaller version called Intuos 3D made for use with 3D programs. I haven't personally used it but, the pro series is very expensive too.

Thanks for writing in - it is much appreciated. Can you please tell me how you use the Wacom in Maya?

I am currently thinking I may actually go for one of the Cintiq's because I am thinking of using it for detailing texture and I think it would be more intuitive to be drawing directly on the image. I do realize that they are much more expensive but it is still within my budget at this point.

Would appreciate input both pros and cons for this route.

It depends of how you intend to use it.

I have tried to use my cintiq with Maya but it's to anoying when my hand is covering parts of the screen. The arm movement is much more extrem than with a intous. I use a medium sized (A5) with Maya and a lot of other programs and I'm happy with it. For fine linework illustration however the cintiq is outstanding (but even then, reguar pen and paper is better still 😉 ).

Hope this was helpful.

Thanks for your input - it is appreciated.

As for now, my hope is to use it to paint texture onto the UVs but I am not sure how useful it will be for this.

Maybe you should try one and see if it works for you? Wacom will allow you to send it back if you don't like it. 🙂

That's an excellent idea. I will actually be taking classes again on MAYA next semester and they have ones to check out - at least the non-screen versions. I think I am going to wait and give it a go that way before committing.

I don't recommend the low-end Wacom Intuos. It's got a small drawing area (smaller than all the alternatives with the same price) and the only reason it costs so much is because you're paying extra for those bundled programs it comes with. Without those, the tablet itself is only worth ~40-50 USD, so if you're not getting it for the bundled programs, you're basically getting cheated into paying for programs you're never going to use. It also isn't any better in build quality than the alternatives as far as I have seen so I see no merit in choosing Wacom unless you're getting an Intuos Pro or Cintiq specifically for the pen tilt/rotation features.

I would personally recommend the XP-Pen Deco 03 10x5.62 Inches wireless graphic tablet work with maya . if it's available in your region and you're willing to spend 100 USD because of its like-Intuos Pro comfort. This is my favourite screen-less tablet at the moment because it has the best pen pressure and drawing experience I've had so far. I don't find the advertised red dial very useful and the wireless is "eh", but if you ignore those side features, the comfort of the pen and the control you have over the pen pressure are absolutely fantastic.
