Scaling question

Hello,

I keep running into a problem where I have a group of objects, and I try to scale the group. But some of the objects in the group scale disproportionally from the others. How can I prevent this? I think maybe it is due to subobjects in the group being based on other objects, and so double-scaling is happening. The object is scaling, plus the modifier object. But if I go through each object in the group, I can't really tell which objects are responsible for this. Sometimes there will be an object listed in the group which doesn't appear to select anything -- yet if I delete it, other objects will disappear. So there must be some link between these objects, but it is very confusing.

In any case is there a simple way to scale my groups so that the whole thing scales proportionally?
