My employe asked me if I can export some models that I been working with as "Bim object". Unfortenatly I have hard time wrapping my head around what it is and how it works.

From what I understand. Bim objects are some kind of system that allow companies to upload their products as 3D-models. These products will not only include geometry and textures, but you can also add "meta data" that you think people will need. Like how much electricity the product consume. Apperently architects can then download these "bim objects" and put them in to their blueprints. Is that what bim objects are about?

So is it possible to export polygon or nurbs objects, as bim objects from maya?

@magnus_prismatibro

I am a tech on the BIM team here at Autodesk, and my Maya colleagues have asked me to comment here. You can export out of Maya several file formats that then should be supported in either Revit, Navisworks, or BIM 360 Glue:

Navisworks:

FBX

IGES

STL

Revit:

DXF

BIM 360 Glue:

FBX

IGES

STL (Binary only)

You could bring in OBJ files but it would require you converting the file into a supported file format before importing. For a list of what file types Maya can export, and what is supported in our various BIM applications see the links below:

Hi,

How can I export from BIM to an STL file? What I'm trying to get is a 3D printable model, but the whole design is in BIM and I can't find a way to generate the mesh file for 3D printing.

Thanks!

Regards,

Mariangel

You can't, you can only export STL from Maya and import into BIM 360 Glue.

Thanks for your prompt response Scott.

So there is no way to export from BIM to any other software, let's say Revit, and from there export into STL?

@Anonymous

No, BIM 360 does not 'export', it is a file repository. What ever format you uploaded into BIM 360 is what you will get back out with the exception of BIM 360 Glue which would output NWD files instead of the upload RVT files (but DWG remains unchanged). So no, BIM 360 Document Management won't due format conversions. You would need an authoring program that can convert that such as Revit. See:

The student version is the full version, just under a student use license (typically good for four years if I recall correctly). There's no 'restrictions'.
