I am using the student version of Maya and I am trying to learn techniques and ways to sculpt/create characters, creatures, etc.

What I am looking for is a function that allows me to create a hole in a mesh in the shape of whichever object that clips through it. For example, If I had a sphere, and a cube, and I placed the sphere half way through a side of that cube, then the function would make a hole in the shape of a circle in the mesh of the cube.

Is there anything like this, or anything similar? If so, it would really help me.
