Moving in Y-axis causing issues

Hello, when I try and move a simple object in the Y axis after its been rotated moves in the wrong direction.

For some reason this only seems to happen with newly created objects and not old ones loaded from scenes.

I have tried resetting the tool and I've have tried resetting the preferences in Maya by renaming the Prefs folder but that didn't fix it, short of reinstalling Maya I just feel there's probably a silly tick box on somewhere.

I have made a video of the issue. The move tool is set to Object in Axis orientation, if I set it to Along rotation axis then it actually works.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

This does look like an axis orientation issue and/or a snapping issue.

If you set it to world does this still happen?

Also, can you check and make sure all of your snapping toggles are disabled (all of the magent icons right below the Mesh Tools menu).

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

All the snap icons are off and setting it to world move it in the world directions, object rotation axis moves it correctly too, but just having it set to object doesn't when moving it in the Y axis.

I reset the preferences and that didn't fix it.

Hmm ok.

Is your Maya 2018 on Update 4 our most recent update? If not please update and let me know if anything changes!

Also, if you freeze transformations and then try to move does the issue still occur?

Hi,

I encounter the same issue as heskethr1, and would realy appreciate to find out the solution too. The only difference is that it's not only on y axe for me, sometimes it's z axe, sometimes x axe. It also seem to only happen after I scale my object.

My Maya is updated, when I freeze transform my object, the problem seems to go away but then I have to manually replace the pivot axes. That's annoying.

Could you possibly post a video of this issue as well and/or steps to reproduce the issue?

If you need a video capturing program, Screencast is a great option that we use here at Autodesk

While I can't reproduce it at the moment, it does seem to be an issue and if I can get your video as well it will make it easier for the developers to work on a fix for this!

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

I am currently on version Maya LT 2018, I am unsure if it is on update 4 or not, it says version 2018.0.0.F

Freezing the transformation the moment an object is created does fix the issue however doing this to an already created object would defeat the point of moving an object in its local Y axis.

That means you aren't on update 4. Can you please update to update 4 by using the Desktop app or downloading it here under the manage and updates/addons tab and then let me know if it still occurs?

Hi Sean,

Just updated to version .4 and it fixed it.

Very sorry for wasting your time, I didn't know there was an update for Maya so I have now switched on auto updates.

Thank you again for your time and patience in this matter and keep up the good work (PS glad to see the the separate button now remembers the original materials)

Hey there, my issue arises when I've selected a few objects facing various directions and when I try to move them in one direction, they move in opposite directions wrt to the direction the selected objects are facing.

Hi,

A screenshot, scene file or short video would be helpful.

If you want all the obejcts to move in the same direction you should be able to switch the move tool axis orientation to world. (or custom if you want them to move relative to some other reference frame)
