how to wrap a mesh around a surface?

Hi,

As part of a helmet im modelling, Id like to wrap a collection of panels around the back portion of the helmet (screenshot attached).

A friend suggested i flatten the helmet portion out, add a blend shape between the two, and then wrap deformer the panels to it. This hasnt quite worked as i have to perfectly flatten the surface out which is near impossible.

Would anybody know of any other techniques?

thanks

been tussling with this one for a while. Ive just reverted to using a bend and cage deformers. But your tip certainly looks easier 🙂
