Hi @bob.blunderton

Thanks for posting, and I'm sorry to hear about your frustrations - I used to work in the production field so I can completely empathize with punching computers, no judgements here whatsoever! 🙂

Would you be able to share that mall scene you mentioned? I'd love to see what you're experiencing and see if I can help out at all. If it's too big to upload here directly, I'd be happy to download it from a Google drive link or Dropbox etc.

Let me know if I can help in any capacity! I'd love to try to restore your faith in Maya's code 😉

Trying to model in this program, on a large mall-sized object (it's a mall - surprise), is a real BEAR of a time with this program. I must say it's fine for small odds and ends that aren't very important, but when you get to large objects, it's next to useless, here's why.

TOO MANY TIMES I am trying to see something but Maya MAKES IT BLACK SO I CAN'T SEE IT. What's the point of having a viewport at all/most when things rendered are black!??? How/when is that even a feature???

Trying to line things up like lollicolumns / pillars up with the bottom of a steel i-beam is torture!

Help. This program is making me pull out my hair. I already punched the tower so hard last month it locked up and I almost broke the darn thing. I've had this computer for years, and others before it, surely I've smacked them one or twice, but I actually got angry enough to punch the tower. Only Maya does this (otherwise, no, I don't have an anger control problem, I have an issue with this program obviously).

Shadows setting on the view port does nothing. This program is a real mess when it comes to configuration.

Dear support (this is the fine print), please don't be taken aback or otherwise interpret my comments towards yourself in any negative way, I just have a serious disagreement between this program and myself. Things within in that are supposed to be FEATURES are TORTURES in-stead. If I'd have had to do this for a living, I'd have shot the stupid computer in rage by now (not people, just the computer; this software hates me, I swear it's coded to HATE me).

Maybe I should change my name and computer name and it won't recognize me... ?

Hi @bob.blunderton

Hope you're doing well 🙂 Just wanted to check in and see how things were going. Anything new I can help with?

It occurred to me that the thing you may be running into a clipping plane issue with the camera, which would explain the black cut-offs. Here's how to adjust that setting:

Select the camera (if it is one of the default cameras, you can select it in the viewport by choosing (1) view > (2) Select Camera)

With the camera still selected, open the Attribute Editor (3)

Under the (4) Shape Node (in the image below, we have the perspective camera selected, so its name is perspShape), adjust the Far Clip Plane (5)

Let me know if that resolves the issue 🙂 If there's anything else I can help with I'd be happy to assist!
