Unable to select objects with marquee selection

Greetings, all!

This may sound dumb, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to select objects with the marquee selection box. I used it all the time in the full version of Maya, but in LT the functionality is apparently gone. I can select individual objects, but that of course ends up being time consuming. I've been through the preferences and searched the internet but can't seem to find anything about this.

Note: I can't select any objects with the marquee selection tool. I'm well aware of the single marquee select setting.

Note 2: Marquee selection works fine on object components, but not on polygon objects themselves.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd greatly appreciate some help.

Running the 2016 student version.

I'm now realizing that I also can't select objects while wireframe mode is active. I can only select objects in the viewport while "smooth shade all" is active.

(On top of that, I can't seem to find a way to edit my original forum post, so I apologize for the double post!)

I'm having the same two issues. No object marquee selection and no object selection in wireframe(4) mode. I'm in the latest version of Maya LT
