I teach animation at university. Maya provides a bunch of useless codecs so we need to install our own so we can study animation and make playblasts.

After installing K-Lite codec pack I still have several workstations that do not recognise the codecs.

After two years of this and no response from Autodesk we are shifting to alternative software in 2026. 60 students every term not learning Maya. Good job Autodesk.

Does anyone know how to get Maya to recognise installed codecs? Can anyone recommend a codec pack that works with Maya?

reading is a good skill to have - "how to install a codec and get Maya to recognise it". I'm not asking for Maya to include decent codecs with distribution - although that would seem like a pretty inconsequential thing to resolve, regardless of what the legal team say. I am asking why is it so that when I install codecs Maya can't recognise them. How can I get Maya to recognise a codec and have it show up in the list of available codecs for playblasting? The IT department installed codecs on the workstations at uni but not all of the machines recognise them - a handful still only have the default list of useless codecs. Why? Maybe someone here knows. That's why I post here on the Autodesk forum - to get help from Autodesk or a knowledgeable user to resolve the issue. I'm not sure how you bizarrely equate that with "ego".

"Just about every personal computer sold in 2010 and later includes licensed AVC/H.264 codecs. Every copy of Windows 7 includes Microsoft's version of these codecs, with the relevant terms incorporated into the operating system's license agreement" Every user already owns their version of H264 as it is apparently distributed with Windows. Getting Maya to recognise it and use it is the problem, not whether or not you are allowed to distribute the codec.

The license for H264 would cost 20 cents per user - capped for Autodesk at 6.5 million. I would be more than happy to pay a dollar so I can actually use Maya for animation. The patents on H264 expire in 2030 so I'm sure we'll see it inside Maya then.

To explain my situation: I have 40 students this term, 60 last term, we have 4 assignments, each delivered via playblast to the uni cloud system. That's about 200 files I have to download every term for grading (not including all of the iterations). The final assignment is 1080p 240 frames - about 600mb with IYUV. About 30mb with H264 or XVID. That's about 120gb every term that should be 6gb - and this is just for one unit, we have three animation units using Maya. IYUV also generally gets corrupted with a moving camera, pixel lock and smearing is very common. The longest part of the grading process is downloading the files.

Best we could get was webm vp8 in Maya2026.

We here have to playplast into jpg/tiff and convert into video later. I know that wont help in your case.

yes, giant corporation coordinating with giant education institute! Nightmare! hahaha.

I recommended using Adobe Media Encoder to do the same, playblast uncompressed, convert in ME- but it's just too many steps.

The webm format has been OK, good quality, tiny file but the playback requires Media Player Classic or Clipchamp (shudder), not my regular DJV viewer (which can usually load anything) so I don't have frame accurate control which is essential for animation grading.

No it doesn't - that's the problem. I'm trying to find out why. In your role of the support guy on this forum your repeated insistence that this "can't happen" is laughable. It does happen, it has happened and we are moving away from Maya because of two years of this happening without a solution - or even an acknowledgement that it does happen. The first step to finding a solution is acknowledging that there is a problem.

Is there a part of the log/output window that records the codecs in the system as they are recognised by Maya? Can we think of a methodology to analyse where the error is occurring?

This is the procedure for all of our students...

Use the webm format to write a playblast from Maya. Open the webm file with Media Player, then click the three dots in the lower right corner. Edit with Clipchamp, then when in Clipchamp export the file. Choose 1080 and don't 'save in cloud'. The export will be in H264 mp4 format and appear in your downloads directory.

This is possible because every computer has H264 as part of Windows. Maya just can't use it because Autodesk are incompetent.

This is not a Maya bug. It is a system codec issue.

Maya does not ship with modern video codecs. Playblast and render previews rely on OS-level codecs, and formats like H.264 / MP4 will fail if the required codec is missing or unsupported.

Recommended solutions:

Use Image Sequence (PNG or JPG) instead of video formats

Or use AVI (uncompressed) / QuickTime Animation where available

Avoid MP4/H.264 directly from Maya

If you must use MP4:

Install a proper codec pack (Windows)

Or render an image sequence and encode externally using tools like ffmpeg or Premiere

Best practice in production:
Render → Image Sequence → Encode externally

This avoids codec dependency issues entirely and is the most reliable workflow in Autodesk Maya.

forget video codecs. render with JPG. then in maya preferences, go to applications and select a program for Image Sequences. depending on what image sequence player you use, find out what flags you need to include in the optional flags for it to properly load and automatically play. its fast and frame accurate and better quality.

Here is what I use as an example. I use Chaos player and the optional flags i need to paste are %f --fcheck --range=%s-%e/%b --fps=%r% . now i just playblast and it opens and plays automatically as if it were a video, but better.

If you dont use Chaos you can download DJV for free. the flags you need to paste for DJV is -maya %f

make sure you use JPG and not PNG

sure, I'll get my students to send me 300 separate files that I have to wrangle - so much easier, thanks for not bothering to read the whole thread.
