You know how you can create a render layer for an object, how can you transfer the shader on the object to the render layer, at present if you create a render layer for an object you must apply a new shader, or am I missing something ? 🙂

what?? you loose your shader when creating a renderlayer?
i´m not sure if i understand your question. what exactly are you trying to do?

let´s say there is a scene with just one sphere. you have a red blinn assigned to that sphere. create a renderlayer, assign the sphere. it still hass the red blinn assigned. so no need to assign a new shader.
if you already have renderlayer(s) with material-overrides your object will use their material but inherit the shader it has on the masterlayer once you assign it to a new/other renderlayer.
