I am trying to download Maya 2015 on a Windows 10 Lenovo laptop. However, every time I try to open Maya, it says "Maya has stopped working" with no other explanation before it closes the program.

The same thing happens for Mudbox 2015 and Houdini Apprentice. They also stopped working around the same time as Maya. (If there was a specific point when all three stopped working, I don't know when it was or what I was doing right before they corrupted.)

I have tried uninstalling using the Autodesk uninstaller, and going into the %program% folder and deleting remaining files. I rebooted, reinstalled using Download Manager, but no luck.

I then downloaded Maya 2015 Service Pack 3 for Windows at this address:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-maya-2015-service-pack-3.html

But that didn't seem to fix much either.

What else can I try to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks!

Failing to do so may result in display issues and/or slow performance.

Graphic Card drivers: NVidia: 320 or higher, AMD: FirePro 12.104.2 or higher, Intel 10.18.10.3958 or higher.

2GB VRAM or more is required. 1GB or less of VRAM will result in display errors.

High DPI displays, such as 4K (3820x2160) or 5K (5120x2880), require a GPU with a *minimum* of 3GB of VRAM. 4GB or higher is recommended.

Minimum OpenGL version of 3.3.

Hardware-accelerated OpenGL required for optimum performance.

Performance may suffer with complex scenes on non-workstation graphics cards and on laptops.

Houdini does not require support for Direct3D (all viewports and interfaces use OpenGL).

We don't recommend any specific computer manufacturer. As long as your machine has the recommended RAM, CPU, graphics card, and VRAM, it should be acceptable for use.

Monitor

Minimum resolution: 1024 x 768; Recommended resolution: 1920 x 1200 (widescreen).

2GB VRAM or higher required for dual displays or single displays greater than 1920x1080.

Color depth of 32-bit (“true color”) required.

We recommend you either select sRGB as your color profile or calibrate your monitor to gamma 2.2.

GPU Acceleration And OpenCL

On certain graphics cards, Houdini can use the GPU to dramatically increase the performance and speed of your Pyro FX and Fluid simulations.

In order to take advantage of this capability, you'll need a GPU capable of supporting OpenCL. On the Nvidia side, that would be a Tesla or a Quadro x000 series (non-FX Quadro; 600,2000,4000,5000,6000) or a GEForce 400 or 500 series. For AMD, you need a FirePro card (not FireGL) or a Radeon 5000, 6000, or 7000 series GPU. Intel's graphics are currently not able to support OpenCL, but they do have a CPU-oriented CL library which may work with Houdini in the future.

The amount of VRAM your GPU has access to will limit the size of simulation that you can run on it. 2-3GB + is ideal for larger simulations.

GPU acceleration for H15 currently does NOT make use of multiple OpenCL devices (i.e. two or more graphics cards) but this may change at a future date.

And Only Houdini Apprentice officially supports Win 10. Some people can install it on Win 10 and not have any problems - But the forums are full of people that have alot of problems with Win 10 -

Me? Windows 7 Pro is by far the most stable platform. I have never had a problem with 3DS Max, Maya, zbrush, Solidworks, or any graphics extensive program with Win7. Win 10 is nice on my Laptop, but I wouldn't think of useing 3DS Max on it.

good luck

Thank you for the quick reply! That is very useful information. However, I am still slightly confused because I have had Windows 10 since before installing it and it has worked fine in the past. But for some reason all three graphics programs stopped working and I'm not sure what changed. I know Windows 10 is most likely more fickle than Windows 7, but I'm not sure if it is necessarily because of the operating system.

Update the programs with the latest service packs - after install, but before trying to run them..
Be sure you have the latest graphics driver for your laptop graphics. Good Luck

After toying around with it for a bit, I finally was able to fix my problem. I'm new to troubleshooting these kinds of things so I thought I had performed a complete clean uninstall, but it was apparent that I hadn't. I followed the instructions posted here:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/installation-activation-licensing/get-ready/remove-products/clean-uninstall

Most notably steps 4 and 5, which you can copy and paste into your search bar and just delete whatever is in that particular file. Reinstalled through the Install Now option on autodesk.com and it worked fine. Such a relief!

(For convenience, here is the list of folders it has you clean out:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\

C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\

C:\Users\All Users\Autodesk\

C:\Users\**YOUR USERID**\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\

C:\Users\**YOUR USERID**\AppData\Local\Autodesk\

The program folders should be clearly named.

Clean out your TEMP files:

Click the Windows Start button.

In the Run box type %TEMP% and press Enter

Highlight and delete all files. Ignore any files in use.)

Thanks for the help everyone!
