So basically, my insert edge loop suddenly decidede to only work on one side... (check picture)

Bug? Or a newbies mistake ?

Kinda frustating to keep adding loops to both sides and alligning them perfectly.

Prior versions of Maya had what was called the "cut faces tool." It allowed you to insert edges right through a mesh like the one you're working on without having to insert loops on both sides. Not sure why they removed it from the menu in 2016...unless they moved it and I just can't find it.

Anyway, you can still invoke it by typing "CutPolygon;" (without the quotes) in your MEL command window. When you hit "Enter," your cursor will change to a thin arrow that you can drag across your mesh to insert the loops.

There are a few things you should do if you use this tool:

Make sure you are in object mode.

Use a front or side view to make your cut, otherwise it won't cut straight through.

If you want to make your cuts parallel to the grid, hold down the shift key before you drag across.

Also, after you type the CutPolygon; command into the MEL field, you can select it and middle-mouse drag it up onto your toolbar so it's there when you need it.

Yes, you can also use the Multicut tool to slice the mesh thru at any angle.

The only problem with the Multicut tool is that it won't slice through the "tube" so there are edge loops on both the inside and the outside...unless you know a hotkey to use with it that makes it work like that...?

it does actually...just activate the tool, click outside of the object in the viewport and drag over to cut, hold shift if u want a straight cut....just did one over a primitive pipe and cuts in and out...give it a try.

Superb help guys. Wish i could accept both as solutions since both ways work perfectly.
Multi-cut gives more options that i could find tho.
Nonetheless, thanks a ton guys :)!

Silly me...I was trying it in Maya 2016 under OSX. Doesn't work...no inside loop appears. And if you've told me once, you've told me a million times- "Don't run Maya on a Mac!"

Under Windows it does indeed work.
