Hi All,

I'm trying to kick out a playblast from maya 2017 and it flat out crashes whenever I click on anything related to playblast in the menu. I had same issue with 2016 a while ago which was then solved by a servicepack or whatever, but now experiencing the same issue.

Thoughts?

///c

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting to the Area Forums.

I tested this out on my end and I am not seeing a crash when performing a Playblast in Maya 2017.

What operating system are you on?

It is possible that the cause on your end has something to do with the preferences set in Maya 2017. Could you please try resetting the preferences via the steps provided in the following link:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Reset-Maya-to-Default.html

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Hey guys,

I'm having the same problem. Every time I go to the playblast option box, it will either crash right then and there, or let me hit the accept and then freeze.I've tried renaming the pref folder, and sometimes when I restart it'll give me one playblast and then go back to freezing. Is it a memory problem? Here are my specs:

OSX Yosemite

10.10.5

2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC

Macintosh HD

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6143 MB

Any tips on this would be great, as it's greatly slowing down production 😕

I would avoid PlayBlast on a Mac. Macs are only marginally supported and no Mac specific development has been done in years. As a result AutoDesk packages a legacy version of QuickTime (7.0) that Apple stopped using in 2010. An ancient script that Maya for Mac still uses forces a launch of QuickTime 7 which can and will result in issues on Mac OS 10.5 and up. Unbelievable, but just in order to save 2-3 hours of developer time and and instead of launching the OS native version of QuickTime they package a 7 year old version of the app inside Maya and hope it keeps running.

Still doesn't work for me. Or it worked to playblast an animated cube, but not an animated scene that I've worked on.

It worked well yesterday with trial version, but as I reinstalled maya today to get student version, it started to crash when playblasting this scene.

/ Natti

I've been having the same problems and found a couple of things have helped.

no viewport 2.0

set it to directX11

if you get a "// Error: line 0: Unable to create video track. Check format." on qt take a look for a quicktimeShim.exe process in task manager - kill it - and try again.

And the thing that seems to solved the crashes for me (fingers crossed):

windows>settings/prefs>prefs>Settings>Animation>    evaluation mode = DG

I was getting similar crashes scrubbing the timeline or exporting caches - the docs are a bit light but it does say:

Parallelizes evaluation and uses all available cores to evaluate your scene. If this mode causes problems with your scene, disable it and return to the previous standard: DG evaluation mode.

The new mode was introduced in 2016 so perhaps its not working with older boxes or is just plain buggy

I would like to add that the crash occurs on opening the dialogue and also rolling over the menu item - not the actual playblasting itself. If I run "playblast;" it works fine every time. If I run "playblast -o;" it will crash.

I use this until the fabled fix appears

$path = "P:/...path to .../Playblasts/";

playblast -f ($path + "Shot_0100_v04.avi") -fo -v true;

that sounds different again. I've not seen crashes when accessing menu items unless it was a incompatible or corrupted plugin. It sounds like an install problem.

The playblasting issue I encountered seems to have been a problem loading 3d geometry in general, by changing the mode in which it was loaded it simply circumvented the problem.

I'd try the latest update/ reinstall and checking your system unless other people are encountering similar issues - but its weird you've been seeing it since 2011.

sorry I couldn't be of more help - but then I don't work for Autodesk.

Whats up dude, I'm currently a student and my AWESOME instructor sent this email out to the class. Below is your solution!!!!

Just:
> Go to your Maya Preferences (in the lower right hand corner there's a small icon with a cog and a little orange dude running away from it (cogs. very dangerous.))
> Go ahead and click that button to bring up your prefs
> You'll see a bunch of categories to the left of that window – you'll want to click the "Display" category
> Scroll down to the bottom "Viewport 2.0" heading and switch the "Rendering Engine" to "OpenGL – Legacy"
> Now Close Maya
> Now Relaunch Maya
> Now Playblast!
>
> Celebrate.

It's SO EASY!

Like using software that isn't called Maya.

I appreciate your enthusiasm but I already have display set to Legacy - and the evaluation mode set to DG - whilst they workaround VP2 being unusable it does not solve this particular problem.
