Hi!

This was reported several times and can easily be reproduced.

Viewport 2 0 sometimes react as if Shading was set to Wireframe, so when you hit an object where there is an edge of an other object behind it, the other object will be selected.

Please report this problem (bug?) to Autodesk.
Help -> Speak Back -> Report a Problem

I'm having the same issue I think a lot of people are having with viewport selections using Viewport 2.0.

Sounds like this person is having similar problems as well.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-forum/extension-2-selection-glitches-in-viewport-2-0/m-p/6973489/highlight/false#M40909

Here's a pic with what's happening. The frustration compounds when I'm trying to change component modes and random unintended objects get added to the selection in face/vert/edge mode.

Camera based selection/automatic camera-based selection isn't a viable solution. I've got a lot of parts and frequently move things around to create variations and adjust components. any help is greatly appreciated. Didn't have this issue in older mayas. Legacy viewport is the best work around I've found so far.

Any help is again really appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous. I've had this issue in the past with Maya but not yet in Maya 2017 and I know a variety of things can cause it. I'm trying to currently recreate this issue in 2017 so I was wondering if you have a list of steps and or things you were doing when you got this issue that I could follow to recreate the problem.

I've opened up a fresh Maya scene and can't seem to isolate where the issue begins or get it to start doing it. I tend to work in the same scene for an hour/hours before I save an iteration depending on how things are going. I do a lot of trial and error when I'm modeling. A lot of grabbing components, moving the pivot point around and making adjustments with extrudes, wedges and edge splitting.

Pretty standard maya stuff, No plug-ins or custom hotkeys. The only caveats are that I use Z-up and work at a large scale because of game engines. I'm quite the vanilla user 😛

I'll attach my the scene I'm currently working on where the issue is pretty rampant at any camera angle/distance.

If I select one of my buildings and export it as an obj and import it into a new scene and separate all the pieces the issue goes away. If I export the same building as a maya binary file and import it into a new scene the issue persists.

Thank you again for looking into the issue.

ps I'm using maya 2017 update 3. I don't think I mentioned that previously.

Hi!

It's easy to reproduce , just create a Torus and a Cube, move the cube over one side of the torus and ....

Hi everyone. Thank you @mspeer for the file that worked perfectly to recreate it and this is a known bug. The temporary fixes I've noticed are to change the viewport Legacy Default. Outside of that my recommendation, especially if you're working in a scene with many objects, is to have the outliner open and have all your objects named properly so you can select or deselect from there as well. I'm still looking into this as well for any other fixes/workarounds.

Hi everyone,

I did a post recently because I had the same problem, and I finally found the ULTIMATE SOLUTION !

For me and probably for you too, in your Preferences > Settings > Selection, the Default Selection Box was set around 15, I set it at 1, and now it perfectly select the element my cursor was on !

As Student Version doesn't always keep Settings for the next sessions, I hope this one will stay as I set it ..

Hope it will help you . :- )

Hi!

You had a problem of unwanted selection besides the targeted object, this is a problem of unwanted selection behind the targeted object, so it's not the same, but thanks for the information it still might be useful for others reading this thread.
