Maya 2017 udpate 4 UV unwrap problems

Hi guys,

So I'm having a heck of a time with the unwrap tools. When 2017 first came out, everything seemed to be working just fine. Recently I reinstalled Maya and updated to update 4 and that's when all of my UV problems started.

It feels like the new unwrap algorithm is extremely selective in when it actually wants to work... and when it wants to be useless. It keeps bending my shells funny. I made a quick video to show you what I'm running into here on youtube.

I've used Maya for about 10 years now. In the past, this usually worked. What is bugging out the code like this?

I'm still messing around with it but I sewed every edge together to make it into one large shell, unfolded it, rotated it then straightened the UVs.

After that and a few tweaks with the scaling tool had them looking decent. It's not a perfect workaround but I'm gonna do a bit more testing to see if I can figure out a better way.

Thanks for this detailed video explanation, i confirm this except for the Legacy mode with Unfold constraint "Horizontal" which works fine here. Also your window looks a bit different, so please try a reset of your preferences:
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2017 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2017 to 2017_backup. Maya creates new folders. Detailed at:

Edit:

The "new" Unfold 3d seems to work better when "Pack" is checked.
