topic Frame Selection not changing ortho camera position in Maya Forum

Hello,

I am seeing a behavior with Frame Selection which does not appear to correct. When selecting and framing some objects in an ortho viewport, the camera is not being updated properly. The steps to repro the problem in Maya 2018.1 are as follows:

1. Create a new scene

2. Set the panel layout to Four Panes

3. The anomaly is easier to see if you set all pane's shading to Smooth Shade All

4. Create a default poly sphere at world center

5. Set polySphere1 radius to 1500 units.

6. With pSphere1 selected hit the F key in the Front Pane

7. You should see that the display looks like this:

What is happening is that the Front Camera Z position is not being changed to something larger than 1500 and remains at the default position of 1000.1. This happens for Frame All, Frame Selection, and Frame Selection With Children.

However if you perform either of the following:

1. Front Panel>View>Default View

2. F key

or

1. Front Panel>View>Predefined Bookmarks>Front

2. F Key

The front ortho camera is positioned correctly relative the object as seen here:

In both cases F key is only framing the orthographic width of the camera in frontShape, and not the camera Z position in front. Rather, Default View and the Front Bookmark are managing to correctly set the Z position in front instead. But the F key should be able to do that and it isn't.

Can someone explain why frame selection, by itself, is unable to reposition the camera to correctly view the object being framed?

Further, why does Dolly not modify the font camera Z position? I see that both dolly and zoom in Front panel only edit the orthographic width. And this is consistent with all default orthographic cameras.

I see the same behavior from Maya 2014 to Maya 2018.1

2018.1 is a brand new installation. I seriously doubt this is a preferences issue. Besides, Default View can set the camera Z while Frame Selection can't.

Joey

Hi!

That's an interesting bug. Orthographic cameras of a new or saved scene are limited to a translation of 1000 after fresh creating/loading when using Hotkey "F" for framing. And to remove the limit is pretty easy as you described.

Please report this problem (bug?) to Autodesk.
Help -> Speak Back -> Report a Problem

"Further, why does Dolly not modify the font camera Z position?"

Because that's the default setting in the options for this tool, just change it.

I've entered an issue for this one:

MAYA-87698 - Large objects are incorrectly framed in the 3D ortho views.

--
