Maya 2017 preferences won't save!!

I am using the Maya 2017 student version, and my preferences won't save. I have tried over and over again, even created a new workspace. Nothing seems to work.

Even my shelf Icons won't save.

It is getting really annoying having to set up my preferences every time I open up Maya. I hit save preferences and get this warning in my script editor. https://imgur.com/Aa9O4hO

If anyone knows a way to fix this issue, I would really appreciate it.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

It looks like there may be an issue with admin controls. Are you an admin on your machine? If not can you become one and or have the admin change your settings so they dont interfere with Maya?

Yes I am running Maya as Admin. but I still get that warning in the script editor.

Hi @Anonymous

It looks to me like you might have an environment variable set that is point your preferences to the 😧 drive:

D://maya/2017-x64/prefs/shelves/shelf_XGen

Two places to check if this is set, first place is your system variables:

Go to Start > Run > type control sysdm.cpl and click OK.
This will bring up the System Properties window.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Click on Environment Variables.
Check to see if you have an environment variable that relates to MAYA.
You may have like a MAYA_LOCATION or somthing to that extent.
Check to see if it has a value of D://maya/2017-x64/prefs/ if it does I would recommend removing it as that is what is causing the warning.

The second place to look is in the Maya.env file:

Go to C:\Users\santosd\Documents\maya\2017-x64
Open Maya.env in notepad or another text editor.
Check to see if you have any environment variables that are set to the D://maya/2017-x64/prefs/ drive and remove them.

There was no Variable named Maya_Location or anything related to maya.

And my Maya.env file is empty, but i found it in my 😧 drive. Is that a problem?

I believe my Maya is installed in my C drive.

Hi @Anonymous

If you installed to your C drive but the env file got moved to the D drive somehow that could cause a program.

You could try copy/pasting the env file to the proper location but if that doesnt work for whatever reason you may want to

perform a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya. This way you can remove every folder and file related to Maya and properly install

it on the right drive which should resolve your issue!

I tried the copy and paste method, and that didnt work.

So im reinstalling Maya now. I hope this works.

Ok, I did a clean reinstall.

Some settings are saving, but i still get this in the script editor... https://imgur.com/pZ0dbv5

I have no idea what to do, and frankly this is just getting annoying.

That's really unusual that its giving the same error after the clean uninstall/reinstall

When you installed it, do you know which hard drive you chose to install Maya to?

Also, are you making any drastic changes to the prefs that could be causing the issue? Like using unsupported characters such as " . / ;"?

If not, can you please explain what changes, if any, you are trying to make to your prefs?

Yes, I installed in into my C drive, and maya documents are sent to my D Drive. Idk why.

And as far as changes to my prefs, they are simple, just click auto key, change timeslider and animation settings. I think simple things. I haven't used any weird characters either. Some are saving, more than last time I guess. Even shelf items disappear every time I run Maya.

It sounds like the issue is with the documents being sent to the D drive because that is not how the install should work.

I understand how frustrating this can be, but is it possible you could perform another clean uninstall/reinstall and then try installing just to the D drive?

If you do this, the entirety of Maya should be installed to the D drive however your Documents folder on your C drive should be set up properly and you should be able to save your preferences!

I know you said you already checked your environment variables and there was nothing Maya related. For what it's worth, the environment variable you would be looking for would be MAYA_APP_DIR. In my case, Maya is installed on the C: drive, but I wanted my preferences saved on the U: drive. So I set MAYA_APP_DIR to U:\maya.

You can check from within Maya whether this environment variable is set.

Find the command line. It is usually in the lower left of the Maya main window. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/Maya/files/GUID-4981A0A5-9418-4274-918C-561E33B0102D-htm.html
If it says "MEL" on the left side, click on that text to change it to "Python".
Type "import os" and press enter.
Type "os.getenv('MAYA_APP_DIR')" and press enter. Capitalization is important!
If then environment variable is set, you a result will appear with the path it is set to.

Unfortunately, what this can't tell you is where the variable is set. Is it set in the system environment variables? Is it set in Maya.env? Who knows? Also I noticed it still says your preferences are on your D drive while the rest of Maya is on your C drive?

Were you sure to install Maya on one hard drive and not both?

Thank you very much! It is running a lot better, just a few tweaks on start up, which is better than 10 to 12 tweaks. I can mark this as Solution.

sorry for bothering I use Maya 2019 and every time I open Maya I have to put my shortcuts again and it does not allow me to save my workspace. A text appears in the script window that says: //Warning: line 1: Not all preferences were saved. See script editor for details.// Any help would be great. Thanks
