Maya 2017 Unable to Batch Render Certain Parts of a Scene with Mental Ray

So I have a fairly large scene with animation, small xgen interactive grooms (eye lashes and eyebrows), and some simple nhair dynamics going on. I basically have 2 characters and when I attempt to batch render, it went just fine when character 1 was in the camera. However, when the camera switched to character 2, the batch render either crashes or will just never start. I am not sure if it is related, but I am also getting this error, "valence 138 exceeds max boundary valence of 20"

I have tried Optimizing my Scene and deleting unknown nodes, deleting my prefs folder, restarting my computer, updating my graphics card... I just dont know what to do.

Here is my actual render log as well... any help would be greatly appreciated because I just literally have no idea what to do.

Maya 2017 Valence Error exceeds max boundary valence

Hello! I am trying to batch render a scene and I keep getting this error. I am not sure how to fix this. I am not sure if it is related, but I cannot batch render this section of my animation either.

valence 138 exceeds max boundary valence of 20 (It says this almost 100 times)
valence 30 exceeds max boundary valence of 20 (it says this about half as many times)

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @agentredgirl

Did you happen to do any converting of Poly to Subdiv or vice versa? This error isn't that common but I've seen it in the past and it is usually related to the valence of a vertex is how many edges are connected to it.

If you go to conver to Poly to Subdiv you'll see an option that says 'Maximum Edges per Vertex'. You could try increasing that and see if the error still occurs.

However if you aren't converting anything and still seeing the error, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it?

Thanks for attaching the scene file! I'm receiving the same error however I'm also getting a lot of errors for the missing xml files.

Like how you attached the scene file via google drive, Is it possible you could attach the entire project folder here so I can see if anything is wrong or missing that may be causing the issue? If the project folder is confidential or you don't want the general public to have access, feel free to send it to me in a private message and I'll look further into this issue!

Sean,

The XML files are just dynamic caches... I dont think they would have anything to do with it. Even when I disable or delete them all, the scene still wont batch render =(

Hi @agentredgirl

There is a python command that allows you to batch render through the render view window. Here's the steps below as well!

(Note: You'll need to change the start and end frame based on what you want to render.)

Run the following python command in Maya in a python tab. Edit the startFrame and endFrame variables to match the production needs:

import maya.cmds as cmds

import maya.mel as mel

startFrame = 0

endFrame = 24

mel.eval('currentTime %s ;'%(startFrame))

while(startFrame < endFrame):

mel.eval('renderWindowRender redoPreviousRender renderView;')

startFrame += 1

Is it possible to select a camera with that python command by chance?

Also, I made some changes and checked my render log again and got this. Does any of this mean anything to you?

Hi @agentredgirl

Unfortunately I don't recognize anything immediately with that new log.

However I do have an idea about the script. If you go to Panels->Perspective you can change it from the set perspective camera to one of your cameras in the scene. Can you try that and run the script to see if it renders from that camera?
