Maya 2018 viewport 2.0 slow compared to 2017

Hi,

quck stats:

CAD Data Scene, 25 Mio Polys, 10.000 Objects. In Maya 2017 i have a 3 second freeze when i select the whole model, in maya 2018 i have a freeze of 10!!!!!! seconds, every time i select it!

Can anyone confirm this ?

Hi!

There where some changes and bugfixes for Viewport 2.0 in Maya 2018 which may lead to this behavior for some scene setups.

But without a similar scene i can't confirm this.

Even with 3 seconds lag for selection i would optimize my workflow and display settings.

Hi Sean,

please find attached a simple scene with 15.000 sphere and around 15 mio polys.

Selecting the group1 takes

3 seconds in maya 2017

10 seconds in maya 2018

System Stats

Dual XEON E5 2660 v3

128 RAM

Geforce Titan-X

For me the selection/de-selection takes about 3 seconds for both, Maya 2017 and Maya 2018.

i double checked on a workstation with qardro m4000

maya 2017 2 seconds

maya 2018 4 seconds

For me it's the same in Maya 2017 and Maya 2018, no difference.

Execute the following script for better/comparable results:

Hi!

There shouldn't be that big difference between Maya 2017 and Maya 2018 (as i said before, no difference on my system).

Are you using the same Viewport mode(Preferences)/settings on both systems?

Try a reset of your preferences to make sure both Maya versions use the same settings.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2018 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2018 to 2018_backup (or even the maya folder to maya_backup). Maya creates new folders (don't copy preferences from previous Maya versions). Detailed at:

If the problem remains i don't think i can help you further with this.

Some more options would be to uninstall and re-install Maya and test new/different GPU drivers, everything else would be specific to your system.

I'm in the same boat as @mspeer. Took about 3-4 seconds in Maya 2017 and 2018. @mspeer made some good suggestions on steps you can take because this does look like its an issue either with your hardware or drivers.

That said, a scene with this much geometry in it is going to be a tad slow regardless of how powerful your machine is.

thanks for your efforts. it is pretty strange

on a system with a quadro m4000 i have

2017: 2.5 seconds

2018: 3.5 seconds

I reinstalled maya 2018 completely on my machine and i always get the slow times again!

it becomes stranger: i am maya beta tester and on PR89 i have

5.4 seconds

i have no idea where to look for the problem 😞

I don't believe this to be a problem with Maya. The file is pretty heavy so it's going to take a few seconds to select everything regardless of what version of Maya you are on. Aside from making sure you're not having any hardware/driver issues I'm not sure what other steps there are to take

If you really want to find out what's going on i suggest:

1. Try a complete different GPU (ATI or onboard) to see if it's related to your GPU/Driver or solely to the rest of your system.

I do also confirm that Maya 2018 viewport 2.0 is much slower compared to the one on 2017, on Linux CentOS 6.

At this point, I'd like to ask what driver version for Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 card is recommended/certified by Autodesk, on Linux CentOS 6.5?

Reading HardwareCertificationResults_Maya2018_v01a.pdf, I see there is no GeForce GTX 1070 under LINUX RHEL, CentOS title.

Actually none of GTX series exist there for Linux, at all. That card exists only under "Windows 7 SP1 Pro&Windows 10 Pro" title, making me think Maya doesn't really support/certify stability for any GTX card under Linux..?

As for why you may not be seeing it with your Linux distro, in our System requirements for Maya 2018, we officially support Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 6.5 but not other distros of Linux.

That said, Maya can still run on other distros but we can not guarantee that you won't see any issues.

There is no such 382.33 driver version for Linux.

Also, NOT only Redhat, but CentOS distro is also supported and listed under the link you've posted "System Requirements for Maya 2018".

Ah my mistake @Anonymous missed the part where it mentioned CentOS.

Like you pointed out, there is no 382.33 driver for Linux and we actually have no certified GTX cards/drivers for Linux.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, Maya can still potentially run and function on your distro and with your GTX card however we can not guarantee you won't run into any issues or see performance issues since we have not certified the combination of CentOS with your Nvidia GPU.
