topic Character Grabbing Pillow Help? in Maya Forum

Hello everyone.

I am trying to animate a character grabbing and picking up a pillow. When the character picks the pillow up, I want it to deform in his hand like a real pillow would do so. But I do not even know how to begin with this.

I do not need full explanation. I just need some good ideas to point me in right direction because I am clueless. Any help is very appreciated!

Hi,

first thing I would try is to model a pillow, rig it and try to do it all with deformations, blendshapes, etc.

Usually that is MUCH faster and less frustrating than simulation. You control everything and can tweak all the details.

If that doesn't work or if it doesn't look realistic enough you could try to simulate the pillow using nCloth.

nCloth has settings to fill an object with air and to keep that pressure.

Maybe you can also do some mixture of deformation/keyframes and dynamics.

Things that have some "looseness" like hair, antennas, ropes, can be sim/animated using skeletons driven by IK Spline handles (the spline is an nHair).

Good luck 🙂
