Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

This could be happening if you were opening the actual scene file since its much older than 2018.

That said, having them export as an obj is the right step to take next. Please be sure they don't have triangulate toggled as that is whats most likely causing the issue on export.

If this issue is still occurring, please feel free to attach the obj here and/or a screenshot or two so we can get a better idea of how to further assist you!

Please let me know if anything changes!

Just started using Maya 2018 school version, a friend made a character in zbrush, retopologized it, sent it to Maya 2015 or 2016 (not sure) and created a basic scene (.mb) with a 3 point light set up and a ground plane/background plane. It opens in Maya for me half normal and the body of the character is all triangles. I do not see where the node editor is to select for converting to triangles when I highlight those faces... was it moved or is hiding in v2018? What else could be the prob? Never had this problem, I just animate already set up scenes that have no kinks/issues so this is new to me to problem solve. Lightwave I could have figured it out no problem, Maya not so much. I am having him now export just the character as .obj by selecting export as polygons not quads to see how that shows up

thanks for your help ....we are both using Maya 2018. Attached is a pic of how the fbx file imported. This is supposed to be a guitar. Same thing happens as an obj as it does fbx, and yes they were saved out as polygons

When you get a chance, can you attach the obj file and/or the scene file here so I can take a look at it?
