I import a model into Maya from a fbx file, and immediately export the model as a new fbx.

Then I open unreal engine, import both fbx files with same options. Below is the result, left is the original fbx, right is the exported fbx from maya.

We can see the smoothing is lost. I tried all the export options but none of them works.

Anyone knows what's going on?

BTW, I'm using Maya 2018.2 on MacOS 10.13.2. I also run this test with Maya 2018.2 on Win 10, the result is same.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

When you exported did you have smoothing groups and smooth mesh toggled?

You also may want to select the model and go to Mesh Display->Soften Edge before exporting.

Let me know if anything changes!

I did few round of test but still cannot fix the problem.

Test 1

1. Switch to vertex mode.

2. Select all vertex.

3. Mesh Display -> Soften Edge.

4. Switch to object mode.

5. Export with "Smoothing Group", "Smooth Mesh" and "Referenced Assets Content".

Test 2

1. Switch to vertex mode.

2. Select all vertex.

3. Mesh Display -> Unlock Normal.

4. Mesh Display -> Soften Edge.

5. Switch to object mode.

6. Export with "Smoothing Group", "Smooth Mesh" and "Referenced Assets Content".

Still cannot fix the problem.

When you get a chance, can you please zip and attach the model here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it?

Hi, @sean.heasley

Sorry for the delay.

Yes, I have managed to solve this issue. It turns out some of the vertex are not connected. I don't know why 3ds max could export such a model to fbx and still remain the smooth.

So here is my steps to fix it:

1. Edit Mesh -> Merge.

2. Mesh Display -> Soften Edge (Adjust the Angle).

3. Export as usual.

And it is fixed. Hope this could help.

Hi!

If this works it's very likely a problem with your object.

You should check the mesh for overlapping components (or just use merge) before doing any further edits with this model.
