Maya 2018 Image plane disappeared

Hello:

I am having the same problem with image plane not visible when I place an object. Object is in space without reference to image plane.

Can you help me resolve this please in Maya 2018?

Does the image plane appear normally and then disappear when you place an object?

How did you create the image plane? Did you try and import an image from File->Import or did you go to View->Image Plane->Import Image

Also can you possibly post a screenshot or video of your issue so I can get a better idea of what's happening?

I was able to set the image plane visible using display "image plane" command. However, when I import an object, the size of the object is too large and the position is never in the center of the (xyz) plane. When I reduce the size of the object to be visible in the view area, the image plane also shrinks.

How can I make it reasonable size on the imaging plane?

For example, I am sending yow an object (fetal brain). When I import, you will see the size.

The size and location of the object is most likely due to how it was exported or wherever you got the obj from.

As for the image plane, I would need the image file to test that but the image plane shouldn't shrink when you scale the object unless you have both selected.

When you get a chance, could you possible make a video or post screenshots of this happening on your machine so I can get a better idea of whats happening?

Check this screencast link out. It shows when I import an object (sent you earlier), it comes out so large not centered.

Hi!

The object is centered, select the move tool and see where the pivot (centre) is.

You can change the pivot position at any time.

Hi @Anonymous

That link doesn't work for the screencast, you can try embedding the video into the post and that should work.

Like @mspeer said, you can change the pivot at any time by pressing the D key to manually move it or by going to Modify->Center Pivot.

When you say magnification, do you mean the size of the model? This is happening most likely from the program you exported the model from and/or however you got the model.

To fix this you can simply select the model and scale it down.

Yes, it works by reducing size of the object. However, if I scale it down then the next object that I download would also have to be scaled down. If the scaling is not same for both, I will not be able to fit one inside the other. As an example, I am attaching a fetal whole body and brain. On MAYA, I import each object (brain) and scale it down to be seen on image plane. I will then import the second object (whole body) and scale it down. Now, I have problem fitting brain inside the body. I am attaching both objects fr you to see.

Hi!

There is no standardized settings for scale in different 3D software applications / file formats.

You have to adapt settings for scaling in export / import options or scale the object manual (or just move the camera back, this also makes the object "LOOK" smaller).

I have created .obj files from lungs, brain, whole body of a subject. When I import them in to MAYA, how do I scale them to be proportionate? How do I color each organ separately.

I am attaching object files for you to see.

If you want to scale all 3, simply select all of them and scale down like I did in the video in my above post.

If you just want to scale down the lung and brain but not the body, just select those 2 models and scale them.

As for coloring them, select one of the models and hold down your right mouse button and go to 'Assign a New Material'.

From there you can assign a new Lambert or whatever shader you want and change its colors.

In your explanation, how do I select various objects together? You had a display of various objects and you could select scenes by highlighting them to move, scale and rotate together. How do I get a display of objects on the side to select them? I mean on the left hand side, you had scenes where you could select one or multiple.

To open that, simply go to Windows->Outliner.

sorry, I think I misled you. I would like to see a table of all scenes on the left (just like how you shoed in a video before) so that I can selectively scale more than one object by clicking them. The reason is, when I place lung inside the chest, I have no way to click the lung to scale it. When I click, whole body is active. Lung being smaller object never gets clicked to scale.

I hope I am able to make it clear. Pardon my explanation.

By scenes do you mean the objects?

The way I selected everything to scale at once was by selecting them from the Outliner which again can be found under Windows->Outliner.

If I'm still misunderstanding you, please post a screenshot highlighting what you mean and I'll be happy to explain how I did so!

Hi Sean:

I am deeply sorry! I got it now. Window-outline, as you described works great. I was able to select all and scale all of them down to reasonable view (without moving them). This way the objects when imported maintain their original orientation. This works great! Now I am at final stage of creating movie. I have to practice using camera and rendering. I am trying to keep object at the center and camera move around in a circle.
