Placing objects - snap to origin

Hi! I'm very new to Maya, so I apologise if this is an obvious question (and I can't find the answer online!).

Whenever I place any objects (polygons, surfaces et cetera) they are automatically inserted at the centre of the grid. I can't place them anywhere or scale on the point of input. I have attached some screenshots below.

Can anyone advise what I'm doing wrong?

Create -> Polygon Primitives -> Interactive Creation
