Hello,

at some point, I noticed that my maya file no longer shows uv map in the UV editor. I though they were completely missing but I realized that if i hovered my mouse over the area, the uv shell would highlight. I have looked through other threads and read about bugs in 2018 version of maya so I exported my scene as a .ma file and am working in 2017 but I still have the issue. I have also checked the uv set and I do not believe that there is anything wrong with it. I saw another forum that said to adjust clamp texture resolution but this did not work.

Any help is appreciated! thanks

Hi @yyumii

Quick tests you can try are deleting the history on the object and make sure you have it selected in object mode when looking in the UV editor.

You can also try deleting your settings/preferences.

If none of that helps, when you get a chance can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it? If the file is confidential or under NDA please send it to me in a private message instead of posting it here.

Hello,

I tried both suggestions, but neither worked. I zipped my file to attach but it was way over the upload size limit. I deleted half of the scene and noticed that the UV editor started to work properly again. Is it usual for the UV editor to do this if the file size is very large?

I did see something like this once before when it was due to a massive scene size.

If you hide most of the scene in the Outliner or via layers does that help at all?

Also, attaching large files here won't work which is why you need to use an online source like OneDrive, dropbox, google drive etc.

Can you possibly use a different site? I tried to download the file but it kept trying to charge me and make a business account since I don't go to penn state

Also in the meantime you may want to try updating your GPU drivers as well as try deleting your settings/preferences.

Finally, you'll want to make sure your Maya 2017 is on Update 5 our most recent update as well.

Thanks for sending me the file!

I just opened it in 2018 as it wouldn't open in 2017 but I had no issues seeing the UVs but I believe this may be happening due to the sheer poly count of the scene and/or your GPU.

You have 13million triangles across all of your objects so you PC may be struggling under the load of the scene. What are your system specs and is your GPU up to date?

Hi!

That's the first time i am able to reproduce an issue with missing UVs here.

Some actions made them reappear (constantly), but it's hard to troubleshoot this, because of the long loading time of this large scene.

Hmm ok.

Can you possibly download 2018 and try opening the scene in that? You'll also want to make sure its up to date.

@mspeer did you open this with 2017 or 2018 when you were able to reproduce it?

I doubt its an issue with Maya itself as I was able to see everything fine I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible as like mspeer said this is difficult to reproduce.

Hi!

In short:

This is a problem of available GPU memory + Viewport 2.0 + scene size.

You can try in Viewport menu:

1. Shading -> Wireframe

2. Execute this MEL command:

ogs -reset;

However your Hardware is clearly not capable of handling this scene.

I wonder how you can open this scene with only 8 GM RAM.

The scene is not optimized and contains some other problems too,

it should be easy reducible to about 10% of it's current size, just by using instances,

and optimizing the geometry of individual objects.

switching to wire frame allows me to see the UV map. This is a great work around for now but I will also work on optimizing the scene as suggested. Thanks a lot!

QA is looking into this and while it your hardware/scene size is a part of the problem it is also partially a problem on Mayas end so this has been logged with development to begin working on a fix.
