Again here I am completely forgetting that I even wrote this question. Okay, well I have both Max and Maya, so that isn't really the issue, I can do the converting myself. Really I want to be able to export into the .w3d format that is used by an old as heck game (Command and Conquer Generals) now, Maya has a .w3d format, but that is Shockwave 3D, and Generals cannot read that file type. Now there is a converter (import/export) tool for Max 2008 and Gmax/RenX, but I can't get that to work. I have installed it and it shows up in Maya, but won't run anything or show up as an import type. IDK anymore, heck even if you know a good website or tool for learning to code a new tool in either Python or MEL I would take that.

Alright so I have posted this before and unfortunately I forgot about the post and I had gotten a reply from you @sean.heasley with an article link however the link was dead when I found the post again. I am trying to do a direct port to MAX, or see if someone knows where I might be able to find a version of the Importer/Exporter for westwood 3d files which happen to share the file type from the shockwave 3d file type. However they are not compatible with each other and not interchangeable. I wish I knew how to code because I would just write the script myself. If there is a way to do either of these without using FBX or OBJ as a transfer file type that would be fantastic.

Hi @brianpfrang

What's the original file type? If its a Maya or Max file and you want it to be converted over to the other I could open the file and do the export/saving process for you.

However if you're looking for a converter to go from Maya to Max without using FBX I don't believe we have any official tools available.
