Maya won't let me import object to another project (file is greyed out)

Hi, i'm fairly new to Maya. I'm trying to export a piece of furniture i modelled in Maya to another project but when I try and import it into the new project all the files appear to be greyed out an un-selectable. I tried to search for a solution online, but couldn't see anyone else with this problem.

-When I attempt to import a file, all the files are greyed out and I can't select any to import.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure but it seems you are using mac which I don't have experience on Maya with Mac OS
