Yea that is a good point. Not happy about any of the being forced to a subscription. Seriously looking to alternative to Maya. Been a decent ride but I think it's time to jump off this train before it becomes a train wreck at least for me an my business. There are other solutions that are quite competitive and far cheaper.

I currently have a Multi-user Maya license that I use for my professional freelance business. As we all know this license is going away. I'm not here to rant (I'd like to but alas what's the point). Since I currently don't have a user based subscription license I have a few simple questions. Originally back in 2008 when I first purchase Maya (to the tune of $3800) Mental Ray was the only render engine available and one required two licenses or a single multi-user license to both render on a server and use the GUI on a desktop. This is why I've had a multiuser license. Fast forward to today and I render using VRay exclusively for my clients. I am told by my VAR that my single multi-user license can be traded in for 2 user based subscriptions licenses for I believe $870/year. If I so choose I can opt for a single user base subscription license for $435/yr. My question is, if I batch Vray render via terminal shell to my linux/windows/osx server while at the same time use Maya on my laptop/desktop to design do I need 2 user based subscription license's or do I only need 1?

this is a question you need to ask chaosgroup on how their licenses work

Autodesk doesn’t control how 3rd party software works with their licenses

Maya doesn't use any license when you batch render.

It's the renderer that uses a license, and the renderer uses a renderer license.

You don't need Maya licenses for render nodes. Doesn't matter what renderer.
