I am new to the 3D world, so apologies if this is something extremely simple.

I am trying to import DWG files into Maya 2020 on a Mac and every time I do it I get an "Unrecognized File Type"

Everything I found on the internet while searching for importing CAD files into Maya is related to the ATF plugin, which is not needed anymore on 2020, but somehow it doesn't work for me to just go to Import and try importing the file.

Any help?

Thanks in advance!

So is there any other way I can port a CAD file to Maya if I'm on a Mac? Is there a different format I can do?

don't have access to a MAC version of either Autocad or Maya you will have to see what formats Autocad for MAC can export & what Maya for mac can import

Hello, Were you able to figure out your CAD to Maya issue for the Mac? I am in the same boat...I used Maya 2016 for years and my clients sent me .stp files and everything worked fine. Just upgraded to Maya 2020 and am looking for other import options since Maya no longer supports .stp files for Mac. My clients use ProE (Creo) or Autodesk Inventor (you'd think it would play nice with Maya since they're both Autodesk files, but no.). A majority of my work is done on a Mac and I'd hate to have to buy a PC just to continue to use Maya.

I was able to do it through Rhino, following this post:

https://forums.cgsociety.org/t/how-to-transfer-models-from-rhino-to-maya/1864958

Thanks for the reply. At about $995 I'd have to take the time to really think that one over.

What I think I will try is downloading Maya 2018 and use that for importing STEP files, then save as Maya and bring into Maya 2020.

Yeah, I got the student license for Rhino so that was kinda the easiest way. Is Maya 2018 still available for download? I was only able to find the 2019 for download.
