Maya file crashing

Hi everyone, I’m a student studying 3D so I’m still fairly new to Maya. I’ve been working on a modelling project and while working on it today it crashed on me. Since then every time I open it it takes a very long time to load and only allows me 3-4 clicks before crashing again. I noticed that the file is quite large compared to my other projects (it’s nearly 250mb) but I have been deleting history as I’ve gone along on this so I’m not sure where the data is coming from. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you could post the file, that would help most. Also, platform, which OS you're using. That is a pretty big file, so maybe you could lesson the amount of geo on some of those heavier objects (maybe a Mesh -> Retopologize might help). Try putting geo on different Display Layers and then make those invisible when not working on them. That's all I can really think of without seeing the file.
