I'm honestly not really sure what is happening. My geometry looks fine (Image linked below - "Maya 1") until I select the "Insert Edge Loop" or "Multi-Cut" tool (likely others but those are the only two I've tried thus far) - suddenly a whole second wireframe appears outside my model, and I cannot select or cut any of the edges in my model, only in this ghost geometry (Image linked below - "Maya 3"). Using the tool on this outside geometry makes those cuts appear in a similar location on my model when the tool is closed (Image linked below - "Maya 4"). What is happening?!?!

*Note - this issue was not occurring yesterday - the only difference between today and yesterday that I can think of was I installed some kind of autodesk security thing from a pinned post on this forum (https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-forum/maya-malicious-script-security-update-and-resources/td-p/9597247)... could that be the problem??? If so - how can I remove it.

I've attached a screencast of the issue below - as you can see in the beginning I am having trouble selecting anything at all with the "Insert Edge Loop" tool. I click repeatedly but no edges select. Finally a random edge that I am not even clicking on is selected, and from then on out the tool works as described in my post above - selecting the outside ghost wireframe geometry and applying it to my model.

Hi!

This is normal.

You are using Smooth Mesh Preview, but you need to insert edges at the original mesh and not on the preview result.

I am not sure why Insert Edge Loop does not work at certain edges, maybe there is a problem of the mesh, so it can find a loop or this is a problem of you GPU/driver.

At first I recommend to disable Smooth Mesh Preview and then try it again, but again, the display of the original mesh when using Smooth Mesh Preview with certain tools is normal.

For further help, please provide a scene-file.

Thank you for the help!

Is there any way to actually smooth the mesh as it is in "Smooth Mesh Preview" without using the "smooth" tool to add faces to the polygon? Other than by manually moving each vertex?

Also side note - I really, really appreciate your contributions to this forum @mspeer. This is not the first time you've helped me and I doubt it will be the last. Thank you so much for donating your time to help others. If you have a ko-fi or somewhere where I could send you a few bucks as a thank-you for your help I'd love to.

Hi!

You can't get the "Smooth Mesh" effect without adding further subdivision, this is technically not possible. Also Smooth Mesh Preview subdivides the mesh, although this is not shown at the wireframe by default, but you can enable this in the mesh settings to see the "correct" wireframe also for the preview.

The only option to smooth a mesh without adding subdivision is by using in Modeling menu:

Edit Mesh > average Vertices
