I'm a new user and I'm stuck. I've finished my rendered character. I have a HDRI image on my SkyDomeLight of deep space (so it must be dark out there). I have spotLights on my character and I've turned up the cone angle, intesity, messed with the penumbra angle.... no matter what I do, my character remains in a dimly lit area (and the deep space outside my "craft") gets brighter and brighter. I know I'm missing something but I don't know what.

My goal is to have my character lit up (inside the "craft") and the HDRI space image, to remain dark....like space is supposed to be. The first one below is what it should look like and the second is what's happening. What is should look likeUnfortunately, what it is in reality

Hi!

Thanks for the file.

The intensity values for the lights are just way too low.

Please try "1000" or higher for Intensity or increase the values for Exposure (you can manually enter values besides the slider range.)

(The reason for the need of such high values is the large scene scale and the "small" light source.)

Tip:

If you want to send a notification for a person in a message, please choose the term (at), like @patpinkston5FJ9C .

The core problem

Sky Dome Light = global light source

HDRI = both illumination + background

Increasing exposure affects everything

Space HDRIs are visually dark, but still emit light

So Arnold is doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

The correct professional fix (best practice) 1. Separate lighting from background (MOST IMPORTANT)

In the Sky Dome Light settings:

Set Camera = ON

Set Diffuse = 0

Set Specular = 0

This makes the HDRI:

Visible to the camera

Invisible to scene lighting

Now your space stays dark and stops affecting exposure.

2. Light the character with local lights only

Use:

Area Lights

Spot Lights

Key / Fill / Rim setup inside the craft

Increase intensity freely — the HDRI will no longer brighten.

Tip: Area Lights usually look more natural than Spot Lights for interiors.

3. Check camera exposure (often overlooked)

In the Arnold Camera settings:

Lower Exposure

Or reset it to 0 while lighting

Many beginners accidentally fight the camera instead of the lights.

4. Optional: Use light linking (advanced but clean)

You can also:

Exclude the Sky Dome Light from affecting the character

Keep it only for reflections or background

This is common in cinematic lighting.

Why your “space” looks wrong

HDRI space maps often contain:

Bright stars

Nebula highlights

High dynamic range values

They look dark, but still emit light unless restricted.
