I had the same problem. I am using Maya LT 2019. I would copy keys from the timeline and the pasted keys would be warped. I don't know exactly why. Maybe its the interpolation between world and object space... I don't know. What I did to fix the problem was to copy and paste from the Graph editor. It works perfectly.

Sheesh.

Copy and Paste Keyframes creats different results

So, I am working on a rig right now that is blowing my mind on how this problem is happening. I select a control, copy and paste the keyframe to another location on the timeline and all of it gets warped. I have no clue why this is. My assumption is that there is something that is effecting it (constraints), but it only shows up when I copy paste. I will show you an example:

If I copy and paste the keyframes (after selecting all for hierarchy) this is result I get:

As you can see the yellow part is SUPER far from the original position. I dont understand this at all. As for the rig, there are some set driven keys for the hands, so I was thinking this might be the cause of this but I honestly dont know. I am very confused, any help would be appreciated.

Hi @riuthamus

Did you copy the all of the keyframes from all parts of the rig? Occasionally if you miss one it can cause issues like this.

One thing you can try is to copy and paste values instead of keyframes. In the graph editor, select the keyframe you want to copy, MMB + drag and release on the keyframe you want to copy to. Then press "s" to copy the values over to the new key.

Please let me know if anything changes!

Hello,
what @sean.heasley showed is a great trick I did not know so thanks for sharing.
What I usually do, directly from the timeline is:
1) I go to the frame I want to copy,
2) I select all the controls I want to use,
3) press S (even if you already have a keyframe, pressing S again makes sure all selected controls have a keyframe at that frame)
4) right click the timeline and copy the key,
5) go to the frame to paste the key to,
6) without losing the selection press S again, (same reason of point 3)
7) right click and paste the key.

basically, the important thing is to set a keyframe on the controllers before copying and before pasting.

Cheers

Thanks for the quick responses, however, In the first screenshot you can see everything has been keyed (well you cant see but I have done so 😛 ), in the second screentshot I have copied the first screenshot keys (select hierarchy) + copy + paste, and then you get the odd transform. It might be hard to tell but some of them get some odd offset happening. They get contorted or misaligned. It honestly makes 0 sense. I will show you a video that will make it a bit more clear.

I am almost certain it has to do with parenting or constraints of some type, just no clue how to pinpoint the issue.

Thanks for sending me the video of the issue!

It definitely looks to be something wrong in your scene file specifically. I would guess that somehow you haven't copied everything or copied things that interact poorly at certain points which is especially likely if you got IK toggles on and off or blendshapes (but it doesnt look like you has those.)

When you get a chance, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it? If the file is confidential or under NDA please send it to me in a private message instead of posting it here.

The issue still exists with the original file. I removed the set driven keys from the parented wrists and then put them in the root of the primary control rig (not being moved with the arms and such), this modification does not create any errors. However, this shouldnt be the solution.

If I had to guess, the world position and the local position were competing for the keyed frames. In any case, I just avoided the issue by removing the set driven key controls from the primary parented object.
