topic Re: SOLAR ANALYSIS for Revit 2015 in Lighting & Solar Analysis Forum

Addressing questions solar and lighting analysis for Revit 2014 & 2015...

Lighting Analysis for Revit plugin is available for:

Revit 2015

Revit 2016 (as part of Insight plugin)

Revit 2017 (as part of Insight plugin)

Solar Analysis for Revit plugin is available for:

Revit 2016 (as part of Insight plugin)

Revit 2017 (as part of Insight plugin)

What's the reasoning behind this??

Lighting & Solar analysis both started as Autodesk Technology Preview (Autodesk Labs) projects in November 2013 and October 2014, respectively. These are essentially beta projects anyone can join and provide feedback to. More information about technology previews here. I'll quote one of the last paragraphs here:

We make technology previews available via Autodesk Labs so people can give us feedback. Most customers try them on test projects. If the technology preview works for them — great. If it does not work for them, no harm/no foul, since the customers are only playing with the technology on test projects. Since technology previews have an end date that is published at the onset of the technology preview, customers try them on projects that end before the technology preview ends. Technology previews have a specific end date so no one confuses them with functionality that is associated with a subscription service. In fact, technology previews are offered for free to Subscription customers, non-Subscription customers, and educational users alike. Purchasing decisions should not be made on the assumed continuance of a technology preview. When the previews end, I don't have a way to re-activate them. It's not part of the Labs process. In addition, since technology previews are not product nor service offerings, Autodesk Support has no control over them, and they are not part of the customer service they provide.

Lighting analysis "graduated" in July 2014, and later in November 2015, was included in the Insight Revit plugin.

Solar analysis "graduated" in November 2015--when Insight was launched, and the full version was released as part of Insight.

Neither is available for Revit 2014, because, well, these previews were graduated when there were later versions of Revit available. Newer versions of Revit often means greater functionalities for these kinds of tools.

Lighting is available for Revit 2015 because it graduated when Revit 2015 was current. We've been able to maintain a legacy build of the 2015 version, but note that it has limited capabilities when compared to the newer version of the Insight plugin.

Solar is not available for Revit 2015, and never officially was. It was offered as a technology preview for 2015, and that's it. The formal release of solar analysis was for Revit 2016 and 2017.

Hi everyone,

If you've been receiving an "expired" error message when trying to run a lighting analysis, please be sure to update your Insight 360 plugin.

For Revit 2016 and 2017

Visit insight360.autodesk.com/oneenergy/Landing/Download and download the version that corresponds to your Revit version.

For Revit 2015

Download the plugin here.

If you still get an error message, try manually uninstalling the Insight 360 plugin before installing the latest version.

Best,

Stephanie

Where could I find any instruction to run those along with the BPAC course pages?

The instructions on the courses seem to be given only for Revit 2015, so they do not accommodate with Revit 2016.

For example, I cannot see any Light Analysis Ribbon.

The data to download seem to be all for 2014 or 2015, which are converted, but do seem to lose the Lighting analysis data.

Revit and Insight keep showing errors.

Many thanks.

@Anonymous,

The process for using the lighting analysis plugin will be very similar. You can skip ahead to page 15 of this pdf for a general overview of how this new plugin works: http://forums.autodesk.com/autodesk/attachments/autodesk/19/366/1/Insight%20GSG_0306.pdf

For specific reference to BPAC, I would recommend you reach out to bpac@autodesk.com for specific guidance.

@Anonymous,

Unfortunately there is not a new 2014 version of the plugin. I would suggest upgrading to 2015 or above.

Solar analysis is not available for Revit 2015. It was as a technology preview when the functionality was a beta project, but since it became part of Insight 360, over a year ago, solar analysis is only available in Revit 2016 and above. You can access that plugin here.

Yes Stephanie, I obviously know that it is not available. And this is why I asked my question. To be precise I would like to know why Solar Analysis for Revit 2015 is NOT available, but Lighting Analysis (a similar plugin, which also expired at one point in time) IS AVAILABLE for Revit 2015? Why Autodesk did not make both of them available?

Hmmmm, InSight was launched almost exactly a year ago. Normally (i.e. based on common sense) on the same day, all the educational materials should be ready and posted online. A year has passed and we learn that "the education team is hoping to release some updates early next year". When will Autodesk finally realize that it is scaring off more and more customers with such an attitude of permanent negligence?

Hi Stephanie,

I have Insight for Revit 2017.1 installed & hoping you can assist with the following enquires:

I get an expiry warning when I click 'Solar' on the Insight 360 panel. Any suggestions since 2017.1 doesn't need a plugin?
p.s. I have installed the plugin anyway to see if it made a difference, it didn't.

Reading a recent blog of yours, "solar-access-with-insight-revit-2017-plugin" I am not seeing what you describe/show in your post. When I click lighting, I get what appears to be an outdated dialog, even though I have the latest of everything installed...
I noticed in the image, my lighting in the cloud dialog version is 2.0.0.17. In your blog yours is version 18. So the major difference I am seeing is I don't get the initial dialog about "select analysis" & I can't select the Analysis type "solar". I only see two LEED options and custom.

Hi @RMITDAMIEN,

Some answers to your questions...

1. Are you using the latest Insight plugin for Revit 2017? It was just released. I would recommend installing it if you are able to. You can download it from here, and I’ve included some of the resources as well. Let me know if anything is unclear.

Plugin overview

sDA & ASE studies

Solar Access studies

2. I think if you install the latest plugin mentioned above, you will see those options. And, in fact, your plugin will update to v3 which is the most current version (I wrote that documentation with a previous version of the plugin, but it is still valid. Just to be extra sure, try manually uninstalling your current Insight plugin before installing the latest version.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks Stephanie, yes, just replied to Majorie Stein in the main forum, you are both right, the plugin I used was the old one, I actually missed the blog post that offered the new link and went straight to your explanatory ones. I was confused by some of the instruction, I thought 2017.1 meant no more plugins, but it seems that was just for the energy opt panel and plugins are still used to update insight, correct?

For what it's worth, I will post the same question to you as I did Majorie, why is Insight always hidden away in the Insight blog & forums? Why is this plugin not available on the Autodesk Desktop App? You have batch print, DB Link, Model review, steel connections, fabrication extensions etc available on the app... but no Insight?? Your team has worked on such a great tool, why not put it out there?

Thanks though, new update all is working!

Re: SOLAR ANALYSIS for Revit 2015

Thanks @RMITDAMIEN. Yes, you are correct--2017.1 includes the energy pieces, but solar and lighting analysis are still a separate plugin.

For what it's worth, we want to be built into Revit as well 😉

2017.1 was the first step--getting the energy piece to be part of Revit. Now, we have to work on getting the solar and daylighting pieces to be part of Revit as well. Until then, you'll have to work with the separate plugin, but know that we are working on it and want it just as much as you do. It takes a lot of planning and time to get something to become part of Revit, so it won't happen overnight, but we are working at it now.

This lengthy historical summary does everything except answering my main question – WHY Solar Analysis cannot be made available for Revit 2015 just as Lighting Analysis is? The fact that “Lighting is available for Revit 2015 because it graduated when Revit 2015 was current” is not really an explanation, because Solar Analysis graduated later, when Revit 2015 was already in the market and being upgraded quite frequently. Why not with Solar Analysis?

with regards and wishes of a Happy New Year

Marcin Klocek
BIM Manager
P&T Architects & Engineers Ltd.
Hong Kong
e: klocekmarcin@p-t-group.com
t: +852 2575 6575 ext: 6349

Nobody is requiring Autodesk to do things “overnight”. But while certain improvements cannot happen “overnight” they still should not take 3-4 years just to be integrated into Revit (with the core technology being ready long before).

Marcin Klocek
BIM Manager
P&T Architects & Engineers Ltd.
Hong Kong
e: klocekmarcin@p-t-group.com
t: +852 2575 6575 ext: 6349
