The ability to project an edge from a feature in one part to a sketch in
another part. Currently you can project an edge from a feature to a sketch
in the same part, but it fails if the feature is in another part. Defect
#429002 and Case #796663. This is needed to create proper assembly
constraints between two components.
What would you like to see In the API? preview of drawing symbol on cursor

Brian,
I like to be able to place sletched symbols in a drawing, and have the
symbol outline or better the complete sketch on my cursor as rubberbanding
image so the user know what to place and where to place them. Two more
ingredients would be nice, controlling the angle of symbol placement and the
snap cursor (yellow) available before the definitive point is accepted.
Brian,

First of all I have not done any major VBA programs yet. I have taken an
Inventor VBA class through a local VAR, but have not found much time at work
to sit down and write an application yet. That said, I have a couple of
applications in mind that I need to write. One I know is do-able I just
need to sit down and code it. The other, I do not know if I can do yet.
I'll tell you what I want to do and I'll let you tell me whether or not you
think it can be done in the R6 API.

I, as well as other users I've talked to in the newsgroup, do tool and
machine design to support manufacturing. Our drawing files contain several
sheets consisting of assembly views, exploded views, BOM's, and detailed
components. Everything is documented in one .idw file. Often there are
several items detailed on each sheet. We use Detail Notes (sketched
symbols) to identify the individual details. This detail note contains
information that is stored in the properties and custom properties of the
.ipt file (Title, Description, Material, Finish, Heat Treat, and Comments).
Additionally, the item number from the (BOM) and the quantity are contained
in the Detail Note.

Currently, because of limitations in Inventor, I cannot get this information
to automatically propagate from the model and assembly. Custom properties
and assembly information (item #, and quantity) do not come across at all.
Additionally, when I delete the leader after using Insert Callout on the
sketched symbol, the property information disappears from the sketched
symbol. So, right know I'm stuck duplicating the information that is
already in the model and assembly, in the sketched symbol as manual entries.
I can't tell you how much of a waste of time and source of potential error
this is! Kevin Schneider has some sample files that I sent to him a couple
of months ago that demonstrate what I'm talking about here. There should
also be a .pdf file in CF with a sample drawing.

So, what I'd like to do, is write a VB app that will let me inset my Detail
Note and let me pick the view to attach it to, thereby getting all the
property, custom property, and assembly information for that part and
automatically applying it to the note. Is this possible in the R6 API? If
not, I'd like to see that accessible through the R7 API.

Hope this isn't too confusing. I know there are others using inventor that
need this functionality as well, it's been discussed in the newsgroups
before.

Regards,

A direct reference from the parameter to its feature or sketch would be nice
to have, i.e.
Set myObject=myPart.ComponentDefinition.Parameters("dX")
If myObject = kPartSketch then
MyDrawingDimension.Textvalue.Suffix="ABCD"
I think some of the app and doc preference settings are there now.... but I
would like to see all of them. I seem to loose settings way to often, such
as edit sketch dim on creation. I would like to have a macro that runs
I have often thought of making a app to batch change titleblocks in IDW
we had access to highlighting things in the browser window we could probably
just use the Windows API to copy and paste, and sidetrack all the steps
necessary to do it in Inventor.

File browser should support multi selection. Most apps I want to write that
deal with files I am batch processing them, and need to select multiple
Multiple select is the Holy Grail. I have yet to find a decent bit of
code to support this in VB. The last time I did it, I had to write a
dll in C++ (which I am not very good at). There are times when I wish I
could open up multiple parts in the Open dialog in Inventor. I usually
just drop them from Explorer.
Probably already on your list:

Access to the Revision blocks in IDW

Access to the reference component GUIDs stored in IAMs before they are
resolved.

A means of deferring updates to the browser similar to a transaction.
Probably other areas where defer updates would help optimize
performance. The problem: I recurse and delete or disable 1,000 parts
and every time I delete a part, the browser updates. I would like to be
able to turn off these updates until after I am done. The last time I
timed an operation which was changing 1000 parts, it took over an hour.

A simple selection method which would build a filtered set of components
and could be added to, highlighted, have components removed from etc.
This would need to support all the normal selection methods used by
Inventor. (perhaps it is there and I just don't know about it yet). Of
course it would be even better if I could set up multiple collections of
components.
access to the entities that make up IDW views plus selection tools to aide
in managing/manipulating these entities at a more automated level.

Some general ideas.

1. Window selection a must as well as usual edge/feature/part/ but
additionally, leaf part and component would be better
2. Line Entity filtering by edge source or linetype etc.

Eg. Writing a utility to better allow removal of a majority of hidden lines
in one view. User would invoke command and in either a add or remove mode
generate the selection of hidden lines to make invisible.

So in add mode, they could pick all hidden lines on a per
edge/feature/part/sub basis or they could add by using a window/crossing
selection (heck a polygon window/crossing like autocad would be good too).
Then they could remove from the selection set etc until its complete,
finally switch visibility of them off.

If this is do-able now, please forgive me 🙂
I would like the following features to be added in Inventor 7.0 API.

A. Surface Coloring shpuld be allowed. I surface colouring to one should be able to apply the selected color to the full of the surface or part of the surface like threads.

B. One shoud be able to acces the feature to which a parameter belongs and vice-versa.

C. The iFeature should be fully exposed. Currently a user can only insert an iFeature and can edit its parameter. But also user should be able to get the insertion point and the placement objects. Currently the Attributes in the iFeature is not transfered in the document where the iFeature has been accessed. So these too should be exposed.

D. We should be able to save the client-graphics with the document. It was promised in Inventor 6 it-self but is not available in it.

E. As the No of features increases in part document, the time taken to create an sketch, Reading and writing the value of the attribute increases drastically. As was discussed with autodesk, it was told that while creating the feature, it is analysed with the rest of the features. It is the reason why the inventor becomes slower with increase of features. My point is that evevn the validation is required to be done with the rest of the features then it should be done while creating the feature, but should not be done while adding an entity like sketchline, sketcharc to a sketch. Also I am taking a feature and either reading the value of attribute or changing it value, the time required increases with increase in No of features. Though the reason is that the No of attribute increases with increase in feature. But as I am accessing the attributes of a picked object then the process of reading and modifying its value should not be too slow. So my main concerned is that the speed should be optimised.

1) iMates, minimum would be the availability when placing parts in assembly
(or hopefully it is in 6 ?)
2) iParts, generate new size of assembly by changing the instance of iparts
> majority of the requests have been met in Inventor 6. Even so, I know we
> still have plenty do work on for Inventor 7 and would like feedback from
you
> about what you would like us to do. If you have items that someone else
has
> mentioned or you think it is probably already on my list please still
submit
> them. Your individual input is important because it helps me to both
> identify issues and prioritize them. You can either post your responses
> back to this group or send them directly to me.
>
> Something that's particularly useful to me is to know the actual task
you're
> trying to accomplish. Requests like, "I need to create a title block with
a
> bitmap image" or "I need the equivalent of the Delete Face command" help
> provide the context of how it will be used which is important in
> prioritizing. Also, in many cases there may be a better way to accomplish
> the same task other than the functions you first envision using.
>
> Thanks for your help.
Access to the flat pattern, without having to go through a DXF file. Needed
to calculate part orientation and material utilization in a strip layout.
Currently, users are having to go to Autocad to do this, and in order to do
this in Inventor, we would have to have this ability.
Another one that may be possible, but I haven't had time to figure out how.
The ability to prompt a user to pick a point in a sketch, not require them
to place a hole center and select it. Been asked in this newsgroup, but I
never saw an answer.
I'm wondering that nobody would be happy with a completely API documentation
(may by also for C++?), an API where all parameters living and events fired
correctly.

I hope so for 7!
I need some way to tell what original part feature created a feature in the
flat pattern. For instance, if I have two round punch tools 1" in diameter,
one that creates a dimple and the other that creates a hole, there is no way
to tell the difference between the two in the flat layout, when it is
created as a DXF file through the API. In order to automate any type of
manufacturing process, we would have to be able to tell the difference
between the two, and some way to reference the original feature would do
that. Maybe XData that says the name of the feature.
A couple of things
One of the things that constantly seems to be a problem for me is selections. The example
in the help file has crashing problems, and to a occasional code writer like me it seems
overly complicated for such a common need. It should just be a call with options for
filters, and window selections.

A few times I have wished I could for instance create a sketch and have it end up attached
to the end of my cursor pointer, so I can place it where I want. I know there have been
discussions about this before, and possibly there was a solution... don't remember, but it
would be nice if it was easy to do.
