Simple 2D analysis

Hello everyone,

i'm starting with Nastran, i never work with this software before.

I would like to do a two dimensional analysis of a beam with uniform load on his upper edge.

My Goal is to know how the load is distribute on each point. Can you suggest me some reading/tutorial to proceed this type of analysis. 3D analysis can be also considered.

Hello Fred,

For a starter with Nastran your 2D analysis is not as simple as it looks. Why not start with one of the basic tutorials: Linear Static Analysis of a Trailer Frame Using Bar and Beam Elements

Thank you for your answers.

I made a first try, but when it comes to display the Beam Diagram under the Result Data the category is absent. I got this instead :

I'm highly suspecting my ipt model where i draw line like the model showed earlier

in other word how i build a CAD model to perform those type of analysis.

Beam diagrams are only available if you output the force results.

Edit the analysis.
Check the box for Force output set.
Run the analysis.

Drawing a line and performing the analysis using beam elements is the best way to perform an analysis on beam-like structures. It is simple and fast and gives the type of results (beam diagrams, forces, moments) that engineers typically want to know. You will not get that information from any other type of element (or at least you will not get it easily).

But if you want to do a more complicated analysis, then you could create a solid part (or surface part) and perform the analysis using solid idealization (or shell idealization). For the model creation, you should go through some tutorials on Inventor. (The main task that may not be covered in the tutorials is splitting the face of the part so that you can apply constraints and loads at small, specific regions instead of the entire face.) For the Nastran analysis with solids, many of the tutorials and Self-Paces Training will cover this. For shell elements, the tutorial Tutorial B3: Linear Static Analysis of a Channel Using Shell Elements covers the basics. (If you need ideas on building the models, you can also inspect the Inventor files that are provided with the tutorials.)

You can also search the forum for previous posts and maybe find some models to download so that you can see how customers built the model and setup the analysis.
