I'm trying to trace an existing profile of an object with splines, but its difficult because the stupid little HUD keeps trying to be right where I need to click my cursor and the cursor keeps trying to snap to "perceived" constraints... how do I turn all this stuff off while I draw my spline?

You can click and move the hud while drawing the spline, I usually just hold CTRL to stop any snapping.

You might want to try turning off any Inference constraining. This can be done in your Application Options. Just uncheck the box to disable them.

Holding ctrl whilst sketching is best because then you don't have to remember to turn it all back on again.

jameswillo, thanks, but how do you get rid of that stupid box... which seems to always appear right where you are trying to click, then if you click to fast it ends your spline when you're not finished?

Can you not drag it out the way?
There's an option too to turn off mini-toolbars, not in front of my
computer at the moment though.

yes, if its just a few moving it out of the way is not a big deal, but the selection I did last night was about 90 points I had to "trace" and it required that I move that box almost everytime as well as click for each point all while holding cntrl the entire time and panning with the space bar... had that box not popped up with every click I could have stayed zoomed out and finished in a 1/4 of the time.

That box is not user friendly for things like that

Ahh, sorry, turning off mini toolbar doesn't turn off that annoying box unfortunately.

I can't see why the box is getting in the way either, it only moves AFTER you make the selection. It has never caused me this problem when tracing so I have to wonder the way you are doing it?
