I would suggest Revit if you are modelling the services (water, air handling, electrical conduit, etc.) along with building structure. If these walls and ceilings are basically only placeholders to establish bounds (and possibly figure out "how do I get that piece of equipment larger than the door into the lab...") then it's best to keep everything in one program for the sake of simplicity.

I work for a small Community College for their skilled trades program. We have an old 2D layout, but I want to start making proposals for upgrades to our labs with new industrial training equipment. I'd like to show each floor, equipment, etc. I have installed the Factory Design Utility for Inventor and that seems promising, but should I be modeling my walls, doors, etc. with Inventor or should I be bringing all the pieces (equipment) into something like REVIT?

Either one can be used somewhat.. Inventor is targeted towards/used on everything from mechanical product design to processing plant layouts. Revit is more focused on Architectural/Building design. I'm assuming that your walls/floors are already set and you just want to show "room/equipment" layout really to which I'd likely recommend using Inventor over Revit.. If you are building this lab from the ground up then Revit may work better for that.

My experience with Revit is pretty limited but I found it more difficult to get equipment into it.. Inventor you simply import step files or just model the part up quickly/easily,etc... I didn't find that process as easy with Revit.
