You don't have to project anything. Simply create the hole in the part the size you want it but leave its location unconstrained. Then make the part adaptive in the assembly and constrain the two holes' axes together. Now they're aligned and stay aligned. Once you've finished that part of the design, you can turn off adaptivity and add dimensions to the hole location in the part if you wish.

Hi - I've been using Solidworks for 15 years and now I'm starting to use Inventor. I'm suck on something embarrassingly simple.

I have an assembly containing two plates. They are constrained by planes.

Part one has a hole in it.

Part two needs a mating hole.

I need the holes to be concentric but of different diameters.

The "project geometry" sort of gets me there but both the holes are the same diameter. I need them to be different diameters.

I want the holes to be edits to the parts, not an assembly feature.

What's the best way to do this please? I can't simply chose the face to put the new hole on and choose concentricity with the exiting hole - the edge never selects.

Thanks

Right-click your sketch on the second plate and pick "Adaptive", then project the hole from the first plate onto it. See attached assembly (2022 files).

Ok - thanks. That has worked.

So to summarise: I have to use "project geometry" but then I can use the centre point of that projection to place the hole concentric to the original. And by using the "hole" tool I can define the diameter.

And if I turn on "adaptive" for that hole it follows the the original hole when I move it.

Thanks.
