My previous team was also torn on that question. We settled with 3D leader annotations to point at a surface, and specified further on the 2D drawing if needed (sketch and draw on the views as needed). You also have to bear in mind that Weldment assemblies cannot have surface appearances applied to them, so only regular IAM files will be able to receive coloring, or IPTs.

I am trying to find a way to show on both 2d and 3d. if An area shouldn't be painted on. in our development department be have talk about to use split tools.. to make the area . but the split tools does only seens to work in ipt drawing and not iam.

Is there a way to do this on iam files. and how does you handle this on a drawing if some area make not be painted on ?

We do this by using split then changing the colour of the area concerned. This is visible in a shaded model or, in an unshaded model by including the split sketch in the drawing.

is that possible on assembly ? We often have welding drawing that. are painted. but have an end of a shaft that we do not wish to paint because we have to mount an bearing. or an electisk connection on an later Assembly

The split must be made in the part environment (.ipt). The area can be shown on a drawing view by showing tangent edges:

You will probably then need to hide some unwanted tangent edges, but that is easy to do.

Attached 2 views of assembly showing unpainted area, one shaded, one not shaded. Is this what you need?
