Johnson,

A follow up to this issue. I have a subassembly with no constraints that will not move by dragging. I can drag other components freely, but not this one subassembly. The subassembly was made using the demote command. I can move it using the free move tool, but it will always stay where it is put once it is moved. I can also constrain it and it will pop the constraint into place when I accept it, but the part wont move before that even though the 'show preview' box is ticked on the constraints option. I have checked the bodies and there are no bad bodies showing, and no errors are present on the assembly. I have tried closing out inventor and opening the assembly back up and the subassembly still doesn't freely drag around.

body check for assembly

Your browser icon should show a lock if it's locked, therefore my only other thought is that you are on 2023?

There is a known bug where adding constraints can stop parts from being dragged.

It will be fixed in the next update which is coming soon.

Hi Kristin,

Based on your description, it sounds like you may have pre-existing sick constraints. If yes, you may want to fix them or delete them. When sick constraints are present, Inventor will try to solve the constraints system more elaborately as an attempt to resolve the errors.

Another possibility is that you may have extensive usage of Adaptive components. When a component is adaptive, its DOF is reduced and it is piggy-backed to the driving component.

Yet another possibility is tangent constraint. As an attempt to stabilize constraint solve, the tangent constraint participants may also have reduced DOF. You may want to use Cylindrical Face Mate or other equivalent constraints instead, when the participants have other constraints attached to them.

Please feel free to share an example that exhibits the behavior. Forum experts can help take a further look.

Many thanks!

Johnson,

I know this wasn't an issue of sick constraints because it was occurring after my update from 2020 software to the 2022, on assemblies that weren't having this issue in 2020. It was mostly happening with cylindrical components. There would be no red plus sign or errors when checking via CTRL+f7, but deleting a constraint, or adding an additional component would usually free up the stuck components.
It can't be adaptive components, as we don't utilize them, and there were none in the assembly that was causing me the initial issues.

In this assembly there were two components utilizing the tangency mate (cylindrical object to flat surface so the cylinder is laying on the flat surface), but I would hope that only two of these mates wouldn't give an issue such as what I was experiencing, as this mate wasn't an issue in 2020.

As previously stated, I installed the latest update and the assembly that was giving me these issues, is no longer doing this, so I am guessing the update fixed something that was being buggy on my end. If I do see this happening again, however, I will get documentation of this and post here.

Cheers!

Hi Kristin,

It is probably due to adaptive. Right-click on the adaptive sub -> uncheck Adaptive. Does it move now?

You need to ground a logical component (which does not move). Please feel free to share you files here. Forum experts and I can take a closer look.

I had the same thing happen today ... it turns out it was due to using "pattern components". I had several instances of patterned components and if I deleted them all, or suppressed them all, the other components and constraints would behave as expected.

There were no warnings or indication anything was wrong with the patterns.

Hope this helps anyone finding this thread.

Cheers
