Guys, I'm wondering if its possible to make nested numbering of items in BOM?
Example: If I have assembly with say 3 sub-assys. On the first sheet I'm showing sub-assys item 1; 2; 3 in parts list.

On sheet 2 I want to detail those sub-assys. Sub-assys are keept counting as 1;2;3 by Inventor.

How can I show all sub-assy parts in following manner Sub-assy 1 - sub-parts 1.1; 1.2; 1.3... Sub-assy 2 - sub-parts 2.1; 2.2; 2.3... Sub-assy 3 - sub-parts 3.1; 3.2; 3.3...

Steps in the attached video for BOMing subassy parts.

In your overall assembly go to the BOM tab and right click the structured tab and enable it. On the structured tab go to view options (magnifying glass over list icon) and select view properties, set view properties to all levels and set the delimiter that will separate the numbers in the subassy (should default to "." as you want). You should see a plus sign next to all your sub assembly components now.
When you place the BOM in the IDW you should be able to just open the parts list as if you were going to input or change any lines, and hit the plus sign next to the subassembly, it will show all the parts within the subassembly numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc...

You can control that through model states. You can have your overall assembly as the master, and for the subassys you want the BOM for make a model state for it, and suppress the components you dont want in the BOM, they will show as 0. In my example sheet one is your main assembly and sheet two would be the sheet with your part 4. My model state on sheet two has the part test2 suppressed so that when I place the BOM for this part it will only give me qtys for the parts in test3. You can turn the line visibility off within the BOM for item 1 so that you only see the items 2, 2.1, 2.2, etc.

So although IV was counting from 1 again, I thought I could change numbering format in PL, but its seems its not possible. Is that the case?

Because now the only way (besides creating reps) to change those numbers would be manually overwriting values in the PL. I think it should be relatively and intuitively easy to add formatting to "item" column so you can have custom numbering + counter.

My additional concern is that for complex and "heavy" assemblies (ex. 100.000 unique parts) creating reps is not always efficient. Not sure how IV will perform while creating a view of big parent assembly and then selecting specific rep. Maybe I'm wrong...

Thanks guys!

Not that you are wrong.. Its just that you have chosen a not so common drafting practice..

I believe its far more common to not need to maintain the upper level numbering across all sub component detail drawings.

Is there a standard that you are following requiring that? If so which one?

What problems will you have/do you expect if you simply utilize Inventors default behavior?

No, not following specific standard. Sometimes out clients require summary lists of all components of all levels on 1/2 sheets. There is nothing wrong with conventional method, if I understand you correctly. You mean that every top level assy would have its own BOM, which starts with 1, right?

I think my issue is that there is no flexibility in numbering options in BOM/PL.

Sometimes we use alpha-numerical assignment for parts, but that is only possible manually... Pity.
