Scenario-

1. I copied a part drawing (.dwg) to create a new drawing of a very similar part.

2. I used the command, "Replace Model Reference in Drawing", to change to the new part. (This is the part where you must pick the main .ipt for all Model States shown and change it in "Edit View" after this command).

3. Now I go to "Edit View" to change the Model State of that drawing View, and it doesn't change.

(4. However, if I start a blank, new drawing, it works fine, just not when replacing and changing Model States in an existing drawing.)

Any ideas on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

(EDIT: Seems like there is a bug here because when I toggle back-and-forth between Model States while in "Edit View", and exit to the wrong one in the field of the drawing, I can then go back in to Edit View and activate the right one, and then it will work.)

Hi Mitchell,

I also believe there is a bug here. The issue is that the "member doc" (mini file represents the Model State) wasn't generated yet after you replace the model source.

I tried a simple case but I cannot seem to reproduce it. Are you able to reproduce the behavior persistently?

Many thanks!

Yes, I am seeing it very often (if it was seldom, I wouldn't post it here). I can't tell if it's 100% of the time yet since we have been using iParts for many years now and we are moving to Model States one part/assembly at a time.

Good day @johnsonshiue ,

I was able to replicate the issue that @mluterman was experiencing, using a single Part with multiple Model States with different iProperties. Here's my input on this problem, hopefully it will help us find a solution.

- When using the command "Replace Model Reference" in a copied drawing for the first Model State, and selecting the same IPT as the FileName while clicking on "Options..." and choosing a different Model State before clicking OK, the model and the iProperties changes accordingly on the drawing. If I save and exit immediately, the next time I open this copied drawing, the Model State will go back to the original one and not stay to the new selected one.

- If instead of using the command "Replace Model Reference", and manually change the Model State on each view, then save and exit, the next time I open this copied drawing, the Model State stays to the new selected one.

- If I use the command "Replace Model Reference" like stated earlier, then before saving and exiting, I go back to the IPT and manually switch between Model State, when I save and exit, the next time I open this copied drawing, the Model State stays to the new selected one.

From what I experienced, it appears the problem comes from the command "Replace Model Reference" that isn't yet adapted for different model states in the same IPT. Do you know if it would soon be fixed in order to avoid having to use a workaround to have the drawing stay updated after saving and exiting?

Hi! Many thanks for sharing the detail steps! It does sound like a bug to me. It should work. The selected Model State should be enabled on replacing the model reference.

Let me work with the project team to understand the behavior and see what we can do.

Thanks again!

If the defect is fixed on 2022.3 but not on 2023.0, it usually means the fix was submitted when 2023.0 was locked down. The fix will be in the coming 2023.1 update.

As of Inventor 2022.3 and 2023.1, the issue should have been fixed. There could be other unresolved issues in the same workflow. If possible, please share an example here or send it to me directly johnson.shiue@autodesk.com. I would like to understand the behavior better.
